Chapter 77: Rapid Growth

Nick sat with his legs crossed, focusing on the rhythm of his heartbeat and the mana flowing out from his core, through his energetic channels, between his outstretched hands, and back.

Through the crystal wall, he cast his gaze across the submerged city the System had designated as a dungeon, studying the intricate flows of force mana forming the magic dome that held the water back. Meditating down here had sharpened his mage sight, letting him pick up minute details he would have missed just a few short weeks ago.

At the same time, he used his superhuman Mind to consider every manifestation of force magic he had witnessed since dawn his adventure. The Janitor’s force armor, the partitions on the third floor of the tower, the dome protecting the Trial Administrator, and the bubbles he had ridden in orbit were the most prominent examples, but there were a few other experiences that might teach him something useful, so he pulled them up too.

Finally, he conjured an Arcane Shield, comparing its energetic composition to the other examples. The weaves of force mana are similar, but the pure mana forms a matrix that repels incoming magic without disrupting the shield.

Nick was trying determine the underlying principles that made force barriers function. After brainstorming with the other mages and performing this exercise daily, he had identified a few structures that were present in every manifestation he’d seen. He still couldn’t replicate them by hand, but he was starting to understand the science of magic on a deeper level, at least as far as force defenses were concerned.

Sure enough, his meditation was interrupted when an update from the System wavered into existence.

Your understanding is sufficient to advance Arcane Shield to Rank 1.

You have accumulated sufficient essence to advance Arcane Shield to Rank 2. However, you lack the understanding required to advance the ability at this time.

Would you like to advance Arcane Shield to Rank 1 now?

Awesome. This method should help me advance my other abilities too.

He had also absorbed enough force essence over the last few days for Arcane Shield to reach rank two once he obtained sufficient understanding. I can’t wait to find out what upgrade I get. First, things first. Let’s take the spell to rank one now.

He accepted the prompt and was overcome with a vision that reviewed his use of Arcane Shield. It wasn’t as helpful now that his memory was so good, but the experience offered a few insights that might be useful later.

Grinning at his accomplishment, Nick moved on to the next part of his training—drawing the ambient mana in his environment into his energetic core. While advancing Arcane Shield was a major step forward, it wasn’t the only progress he’d made in his attempts to master the magical arts.

While studying with the mages, he had realized his core naturally drew in life mana, although he could absorb compatible types from his surroundings too. Whenever he cast a spell, his core converted the mana into the frequency the magic required. Some energy was lost in the process, like filtering light through colored glass.

However, if he had absorbed that type of mana directly, there was no need to filter it, and no energy was lost. This discovery would let him expand his effective mana pool, as long as he planned his expenditures ahead of time and collected the types he needed.

Nick was also getting better at manipulating the mana in his environment without absorbing it and expelling mana from his core and weaving it himself—a process he hoped would allow him to modify and free cast spells once he mastered the technique.

His latest breakthrough in this area was something he’d learned from Ella, accumulating and expelling small amounts of gravity mana. The only effect it had at his current level of proficiency was increasing the weight of his body by about ten pounds. He wasn’t discouraged, since that was exactly what he’d been hoping to achieve, taking him one step closer to a goal he had been pursuing for some time.

I need to improve before I give it a test run though. I don’t want to be carried across the continent by a stiff breeze.

After bringing his session to a close, he bid the researchers farewell—who were engrossed with the runes covering the dungeon’s door. Right now, opening it was a secondary goal, since the man leading the team thought the lock was a puzzle based on the fundamental laws of magic.

It meant that in addition to obtaining whatever treasures were sealed in the dungeon, working on the puzzle was advancing Aurora’s understanding of mana. Every day, the team down here met with the group researching the wells, pooling their findings to allow for parallel advancement instead of working on redundant issues.

While these thoughts passed through his head, Nick climbed the winding staircase leading to the surface—ears popping several times from the change in pressure. He spent a few minutes gazing at the Shrine of the Faceless gods before following a path between the prolific boulders to the dock his people had built, where several rafts were lashed.

Before he set sail, he peered into the water, searching for any sign of danger. Team Earth had spotted the creature in the lake on two separate occasions, but it was so shy that it had vanished into the depths within seconds being sighted.

They hadn’t been able to make out the details, but it was a gigantic beast covered in deep blue scales. More critically, people with information-gathering abilities had confirmed that whatever it was, it had no hostile intentions.

They were hoping to learn more soon and proceeding with caution in the meantime, but the lake was no longer off-limits, which meant his people could enjoy the water. Given the sweltering heat and pervasive dust of the badlands, the shoreline was a popular destination. With their attributes, it was easy to minimize their ecological footprint, and Aurora intended to keep the lake as pristine as possible as the city grew.

While he floated toward the settlement, Nick watched the city’s newest members training with Kenji, going through a series of drills intended to teach them battlefield awareness, how to handle their weapons, follow orders, and fight as a team. There was a separate program that focused on performing in smaller parties, along with countless other endeavors to help narrow the gap between these recent arrivals and Team Earth’s elites.

Abby’s people were adapting remarkably well. Some of them weren’t suited to living in a dangerous Frontier biome, but being surrounded by powerful people offered them a sense of security they deeply appreciated.

They had reported the location of several settlements in the jungle biome they had come from. Kenji had sent a team to conduct an extensive survey of the region and establish contact. Hopefully, they will be a better fit for the people who aren’t happy here. I should see if Desert Rose is open to accepting new citizens too.

There had been a few disturbances thus far—mostly altercations between the new arrivals—but a warning from Ella had been enough to rectify the situation. Fortunately, she seemed to enjoy her role as sheriff, as long as it didn’t take too much time out of her day.

Liz was planning to make the position permanent if she could talk Ella into it. Maintaining order would be important as Aurora grew, even though there was no crime to speak of and such conflicts were few and far between.

On the whole, Aurora’s new citizens were fitting in, and Elizabeth planned to use their integration as a template as the city grew. They were contributing in various ways—everything from cleaning and maintenance to crafting, harvesting, and exploration. A fair number were training hard to improve their combat skills and advance their abilities, participating in scouting runs to help them level up by fighting monsters and completing challenges.

The challenges that could be repeated had been attempted by almost everyone in the city, offering a modest but reliable means of gaining experience, essence, City Points, and the consumables that were in chronically short supply until the crafters learned how to make their own.

Of course, the new arrivals weren’t the only ones who had made major gains over the last few weeks. On that note, Nick pulled up his updates to consider his recent progress.

  Active Abilities

Arcane Shield (Spell). Rank: 1. (You have enough essence to advance the ability to Rank 2 but lack the understanding required to do so).
