The deep shadows of the forest grew heavier as the magic forest ranger and the group of teachers pushed further into the thickets, their senses alert to every rustle and snap beneath the towering trees. John's pulse quickened as he trailed silently a short distance behind them, careful to remain unseen amidst the twisted roots and low-hanging branches making use of his Shadow Veil spell.
Ahead, a chilling sight came into view: the missing students, bound tightly in thick, pulsing vines that glimmered with unnatural energy. Their faces were pale, eyes wide with fear, but still alive. Looming protectively over them was a massive, terrifying creature—an apex predator freshly ascended for the second time, its very presence radiating raw power. At level 50 and no longer tier I, this beast belonged to the fabled Red Zone or perhaps even the dreaded Black Zone, places forbidden to students. Its dark, sinewy form shifted with unnatural grace, eyes glowing with sharp intelligence far beyond the mindless brute most encounters suggested.
The wards surrounding the area, designed to repel such creatures, seemed to have faltered inexplicably, allowing this monstrous entity to breach its bounds. The ranger tightened the edges of her open beige jacket with a swift motion, the sheer fishnet beneath now hidden as she readied herself for the imminent battle.
The creature’s cold gaze flicked between the captives and the approaching teachers—and a calculating smirk twisted its cruel maw. This was no mindless monster—it had orchestrated a dangerous trap, using the students as bait to lure in the teachers who would be far richer prey.
With a fierce roar that shook the underbrush, the beast launched itself into combat. The teachers quickly formed a defensive circle, their combined magic and steel unleashed in a torrent of spells and strikes. The ranger’s elemental attacks intertwined with their assaults as magical flames, crackling bolts of arcane energy, and icy shards filled the air.
Amidst the chaos, John moved like a shadow. Carefully, silently, he slipped through the frenzy, eyes fixed on the trembling students. Using deft hands and practiced precision, John severed the enchanted vines binding their limbs. Whispering quiet reassurances, he guided both fifth and first years alike toward the narrow path that led back to safety.
The ranger caught sight of John’s daring and unexpected intervention. Despite the whirlwind of battle, her sharp brown eyes met his to offer a brief, grateful nod—an unspoken acknowledgment that his courage and quick thinking had turned the tide for the trapped students.
As the freed students hurried toward the exit under John’s direction, the battle raged on—an echo of spells and roars woven into the ancient forest’s pulse. The alliance of teachers and ranger fought fiercely, now bolstered by the knowledge that the captives were no longer helpless.
In this moment of peril and defiance, John’s shadow slipped away from the fray, his role shifting from rescuer to silent guardian, weaving unseen between the strikes, ensuring that none of the young ones would be lost in the fight that would decide their fate.
After being sure that the fleeing students crossed the last ward, exiting the green zone and on the way through the normal forest to the main school’s campus, the crackling tension hung heavy as John silently slipped back through the shimmering ward at the outer edge of the Green Zone, his gaze fixed on the distant clearing where the battle still raged. The anguished cries and fierce roars cut through the underbrush like knives, and he knew the time for hesitation was past.
Steeling himself, John quickened his pace toward the fray, the woods falling away as he approached. The monster that towered over the struggling teachers was unlike anything he had seen or studied—far beyond the usual predators of the forest’s lower tiers.
Standing nearly three meters tall, the beast’s hulking frame was cloaked in black, matted fur streaked with jagged, bone-like protrusions running down its spine. Its massive limbs ended in razor-sharp claws that tore into the earth, shaking the ground with each agonizing step. A pair of glowing, blood-red eyes burned with feral intelligence beneath a snarling maw filled with rows of serrated teeth that gleamed dangerously in the dappled light. Its broad chest heaved with primal power, and swirling dark energy coiled around its massive form, a telltale sign of recent ascension and terrifying arcane force. John now felt, this challenge was too much, even for him. But he was not alone. This is probably not what the ranger meant when she said that team work fighting would be trained at a later date.
Stolen story; please report.
Two of the teachers lay unconscious, their bodies battered and broken, while the rest fought on desperately, their combined spells barely slowing the creature’s relentless assault. The beast seemed unbroken — a living nightmare that embodied both raw strength and cunning malice.
John’s heart clenched with a fierce self-reproach. I should have grown stronger… my potions… my tactics… Yet now was no time to lament. The lives of friends and comrades hung in the balance.
Drawing a deep breath, John summoned every fragment of willpower and magic within him. His vision sharpened as he activated Feral Battle Sense; the world focused through a scarlet haze, his senses razor-tuned, primal hunger gnawing at his core while fear evaporated into oblivion. His muscles flexed with newfound strength, every nerve alive with anticipation.
Simultaneously, Paradox Echo rippled through his very being, weaving strands of absorbed energy from the beating spells and strikes around him, storing power for a decisive blow. The fiery surge of Beast’s Frenzy roared inside, urging him into a frenzy of sharpened attack and resilience, the feral side of his nature uncloaking like a wild storm.
With a flurry of swift gestures, John cast layered defenses—Minor Healing to mend wounds, Shield to ward against crushing blows, and Luminous Veil, a radiant shield shimmering with gentle light, cocooning both himself and the struggling allies in a protective aura that boosted their stamina and healing, a bit more than what the system’s description told.
His hands sparked with elemental fury, each attack spell cast with relentless precision and magnified by Overwhelm—his magic surging beyond normal limits as crackling bolts of water and arcs of light hammered into the creature’s thick hide. The beast snarled, its leathery skin scarred but hardly weakened.
As the battle progressed, John found himself moving with less human calculation and more instinct—with teeth bared and muscles coiled like those of a predator. His vision flickered between clarity and blood-lust, an odd blend of control and wild abandon guiding his strikes.
Then, sensing an opening amidst the chaos, John launched forward with a savage snarl and bit into the creature’s shoulder, teeth sinking with fierce intent.
A sudden surge exploded within him as dark energy pulsed from the monster into his veins, activating a latent power—Dhampir's Absorption.
A translucent window materialized before John’s eyes:
Skill Acquired: Apex Aura
On the verge of a skill and a bloodline enhancement, it grants the user dominance over lower beings in the food chain.
The skill seemed worthless first, at least in the current situation as he was certainly not higher in the food chain than the monster they were facing. But then John thought, his paradox class humming in the background. Who defined where he is in the food chain? He might be smaller, lower level and weaker than the beast but he had faced forces unimaginable to this puny beast. In an effort of willpower, John convinced himself that he was predator and it was merely prey. Had he not just bit the creature and drawn blood?
Empowered by the sudden realization, John’s fingers positioned like claws raked with renewed vigor, his spells cascading faster and fiercer, the fiery glow of Overwhelm radiating brighter than ever.
The monster roared in disbelief and fury, suddenly suppressed by his own skill as if John was the apex predator here. Its attacks began to falter under the storm of relentless magic and unyielding ferocity. John moved fluidly between the teachers’ faltering defenses, buffing their armor with Luminous Veil and patching wounds with healing spells, all while severing sinew and bone with the fury of a savage beast.
Sweat mingled with dirt on his brow, breath ragged yet fierce. Time blurred. The forest echoed with the clash of will and power—arcane shockwaves tearing through thick trees, the ancient earth trembling under the fury of this titanic struggle.
Despite dark moments when the creature surged with terrifying strength, John’s spirit refused to break. The fusion of human resolve and feral instinct forged a bridge between might and magic, carving hope from desperation.
At last, bloodied and exhausted, the monster staggered—rear limbs buckling, claws dragging uselessly as John loosed a final, devastating blast of charged water magic fused with arcane pulse.
The beast collapsed with a thunderous crash, its breath a ragged gasp as life ebbed away.
Around him, teachers gasped in awe and relief, gathering their strength as John fell to one knee, panting, his crimson eyes slowly fading back to their usual hue.
Eleonor, arriving just as the battle ended, helped steady him, her voice barely above a whisper, “You did more than anyone could’ve hoped… but you mustn’t carry this burden alone.”
John first worried wanted to ask what she was doing here but too weak, finally gave a tired but determined smile, the hard-won power coursing through him a bitter, thrilling reminder of the price paid—one more step on a path that promised both legends and shadows yet to come but the path to the monster seemed more and more likely and that was scary.
John just had time to view a system notification before fainting in Eleonor’s arms. Why was this cursed system always changing its format was his last thought.
