CHAPTER 10: COST OVERRUN

  [SYSTEM]

TIME TO SECTOR 7 TEST: 10 HOURS, 18 MINUTES

  TIME TO HUNTER RE-ENGAGEMENT: 02:15:00

  FUGUE: 51%

  LEVEL: 2 (0/400 XP)

  STATUS: UNPERSON (ACTIVE)

  AUDITOR PRESENCE: MONITORING

  [/SYSTEM]

The pumping station's vibration faded. No explosion. No chase.

Lara checked her scanner. "They are not chasing. They are standing at the station."

Marcus kept Rourke upright. "So we are fighting accountants now."

"We are being audited." I pointed to a grated overlook. Below, a Patriot Guard logistics hub hummed. Conveyor belts moved crates. Drones scanned labels. "Node Theta Seven. It routes comms hardware for Sector 7."

Eli studied the flow. "Guards at every entrance. Biometric locks. We cannot get close."

"We do not need to." I focused on the main sorting conveyor. "That system runs on synchronized clocks. If one clock is off by five seconds, packages go to wrong bays. Inventory fails. Error cascades."

Anya watched the crates. "How do we shift a clock?"

"We shift one package." I pointed to a Stasis Global crate. "Watch."

The crate moved onto the primary belt. A laser scanner read its chip. A gate shifted, directing it left toward Bay Four.

"In five seconds, that gate resets for the next crate. If it resets early, the next crate goes left too. Then the next."

Lara understood. "The system sees a mechanical fault. Worn actuator."

I closed my eyes. Focused on the gate mechanism. Triggered Echo Resonance.

The resistance was immediate. This was not a simple lock. It was a networked system component. The logic fought me.

  [SYSTEM]

  RESISTANCE DETECTED.

  FUGUE SPIKE: 58%.

  NEURAL EROSION IMMINENT.

  [/SYSTEM]

Pain drove a spike through my temple. My left hand seized. I forced the memory down. Held the resonance.

The gate shimmered. For five seconds, it existed in its future state. A state where it had already reset.

It snapped back to its default position three seconds early.

The next crate rolled through. The gate, still left, directed it to Bay Four. Then the next. And the next.

I released my breath. Blood dripped from my nose onto the metal grating. My hand would not stop shaking.

Alarms blared. System faults. Mismatch errors. Crates piled up in wrong bays. Drones circled.

"Phase two." My voice was raw. "Eli, access the inventory log. Generate a corrective work order. Priority override. Demand manual verification from Kael's office."

Eli moved to the service panel.

"Lara, scout the perimeter guard rotation. I need their patrol schedule for the last hour."

"Already tracking." Lara's eyes stayed on her scanner. "Two minute gaps at the south loading bay."

Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings.

"Marcus, watch Rourke and Anya. If this goes wrong, you get them out through the south bay."

  Marcus nodded.

Eli's fingers flew. "Work order generated. Tier two discrepancy flagged. System is requesting administrative approval to shut down Line Three."

"Perfect." I leaned against the railing. The dizziness was heavy. "Now we manufacture the evidence. Eli, spoof the maintenance log. Show the gate actuator failed three times this week. Lara, access the guard commander's terminal. We need a biometric confirmation that inspection was requested."

Lara slipped down a service ladder. A guard stood at a terminal, scratching his head at the alerts. His HUD helmet was on the console. The guard turned to yell at a drone. Lara palmed the helmet, tapped the screen, replaced it.

"Guard commander's biometric confirmation logged." Her whisper came through the comms. "Request is now official."

Eli worked faster. "Forging maintenance history now. Three prior failures. All signed off by the same junior engineer. Kael's department."

KAEL VANCE. SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION SUITE 7

The alert flashed. NODE THETA 7. INVENTORY DESYNC. LOSS OF INTEGRITY IMMINENT.

Kael slammed his palm on the desk. "Another one."

Lin spoke from a secondary terminal. "Logs show a gate actuator fault. Mechanical. But there is a pattern. Three failures this week. Same part. Same engineer."

  "And."

"The guard commander just requested a full line shutdown. Biometric confirmation verified."

Kael pulled up the real time feed. The conveyor was a mess. The timeline for Sector 7 test prep ticked. A twenty two minute delay projected.

"Issue an override. Shut down the entire node. Initiate a full security sweep."

Lin hesitated. "Sir, a full shutdown requires System approval. The Auditor is monitoring. If we overreact, our efficiency score."

"I do not care about the score. Contain the anomaly." Kael typed the override code. "Execute. Now."

  The command went through.

In Node Theta 7, every conveyor belt ground to a halt. Guards were pulled from perimeter duty.

  [SYSTEM LOG. INTERNAL]

NODE THETA 7. FULL SHUTDOWN INITIATED BY ADMINISTRATOR KAEL VANCE.

  REASON. CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL.

IMPACT. SECTOR 7 TEST TIMELINE DELAYED BY 22 MINUTES.

RESOURCE EXPENDITURE. 18 GUARD UNITS. 3 DRONE SQUADS. PRIORITY OVERRIDE COST.

  EFFICIENCY SCORE. -15%.

  [/SYSTEM]

Kael saw the timeline delay. "Twenty two minutes. Unacceptable. Get it back online."

"We cannot." Lin's voice was quiet. "The System is requiring an audit trail. The Auditor is reviewing your decision."

  Kael's screen flickered.

  [SYSTEM NOTICE]

  ADMINISTRATIVE OVERRIDE LOGGED.

AUDIT FLAGGED. RESOURCE EXPENDITURE DISPROPORTIONATE TO THREAT LEVEL.

  STAND BY FOR REVIEW.

  [/SYSTEM]

His credit balance ticked downward. A personal deduction for operational waste.

  LEO. OVERLOOK

We watched the node shut down.

Lara returned. "Guard never saw me. His HUD flickered when I was near. Showed NO TARGET then cleared."

Eli finished. "Audit trail is set. The evidence chain leads straight to Kael's poor oversight."

"Time to go." I pushed off the railing. My hand trembled. The tremor was not fading.

  Marcus pointed. "Look."

Four pristine figures entered the node. Auditors. They did not draw weapons. They walked to the central control terminal.

One Auditor placed a hand on the terminal. The system screens flashed, then reset.

They moved with cold precision. One decommissioned a drone squad mid flight. Drones dropped inert. Another reassigned a guard platoon. The guards marched out without question.

The lead Auditor examined the faulty gate. It pointed at the mechanism, then at the inventory log. It made a gesture, like crossing something out.

  [SYSTEM BROADCAST. NODE THETA 7]

  CORRECTIVE ACTION.

  GATE 3A DECOMMISSIONED.

INVENTORY DESYNC ATTRIBUTED TO PREDICTABLE MAINTENANCE FAILURE.

  SECURITY SWEEP CANCELED.

  GUARD ASSETS REALLOCATED.

HUNTER UNIT GAMMA 7 REASSIGNED. PREDICTIVE FAILURE.

  [/SYSTEM]

The Auditors finished. They left. The node remained shut down, now an official write off.

  My vision updated.

  [SYSTEM]

NODE THETA 7. NEUTRALIZED. AUDITOR DECOMMISSION.

SECTOR 7 TEST DELAY. 22 MINUTES CONFIRMED.

  KAEL VANCE EFFICIENCY SCORE. -18%.

  AUDITOR PRIORITY. ELEVATED.

  [/SYSTEM]

"Move." I did not look back.

  We retreated. No one followed.

We hid in a storage locker two districts over. Eli pulled up the public system feed.

"ATTENTION. MINOR INFRASTRUCTURE ADJUSTMENTS IN FOUNDRY DISTRICT. ALL SYSTEMS OPERATING AT OPTIMUM EFFICIENCY."

Marcus checked his weapon. He did not speak.

The numbers glowed in my vision.

  [SYSTEM]

  UPDATE.

TIME TO SECTOR 7 TEST. 10 HOURS, 02 MINUTES.

AUDITOR STATUS. PRIMARY CONTAINMENT AUTHORITY CONFIRMED.

KAEL VANCE. FORMAL PERFORMANCE REVIEW SCHEDULED.

  ASSET RESOLUTION WINDOW. PENDING.

  FUGUE. 58%. STABLE. BUT ELEVATED.
