Ch 59 Realization

  Chapter 59: Realization

That evening, Ivaline hunted her own dinner.

The forest beyond the eastern edge of town was already familiar to her—the broken twigs, the shallow tracks, the places where small game liked to linger near dusk. Her movements were quiet, efficient, guided by habit and the faint sharpening of her senses.

When she returned, the sun was already leaning low, painting the sky in muted orange.

Ray was waiting by the eastern gate.

They stood there for a brief moment, neither speaking. The noise of the town drifted around them—vendors closing stalls, guards changing shifts, distant laughter—but between them, there was only stillness.

“This is fine,” Ivaline said at last.

  Ray nodded.

  “…Alright.”

No farewell. No promise for tomorrow. Just that.

Ray turned back toward town, his steps steady, purposeful. Ivaline watched him go for only a moment before adjusting the bundle at her side and heading in the opposite direction.

  She didn’t get far.

  “Ivaline.”

  She stopped.

Brannic stood near the gate post, arms folded across his broad chest, tail stiff behind him. Edric was beside him, butcher’s apron still stained from the day’s work, his knife resting—not raised, but never far. Tomas came running down the street, breath uneven, flour still dusting his hair and sleeves.

“You alright?” Tomas asked immediately, voice tight with concern.

If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

  “Yes.”

Brannic’s gaze didn’t leave her face.

  “About last night.”

  Edric added flatly,

  “Start talking.”

  So, she did.

  She told them everything.

From the moment Ray asked to speak with her.

  To the training.

  To the room.

  To the lessons.

  To the sleep.

No excitement. No embarrassment. No attempt to soften or justify anything.

  Just facts.

  Her tone never changed.

When she finished, the silence lingered.

Tomas let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. His shoulders finally relaxed.

  “…That’s it?”

  “Yes.”

  Edric snorted.

  “Hah. Thought so.”

Brannic clicked his tongue quietly, tail lowering just a fraction.

  “Tch.”

Without another word, Tomas put a warm loaf of bread into her hands.

  “Keep them.”

Brannic pressed a small pouch into her palm.

  “Dried nuts. It’s good.”

Edric stepped forward and took her catch without asking.

  “I’ll handle this.”

He then turning back toward his stall.

  “Free cut. Salt and spice.”

  She blinked once.

  “…Thank you.”

None of them smiled. None of them explained.

  They didn’t need to.

After eating, Ivaline returned to her half-broken house. The door creaked as she closed it behind her. She checked the latch, sat down on the familiar cold floor, and stared at her hands.

  Foot placement.

  Weight shift.

Where her eyes should be before her blade ever moved.

She repeated the motions in her mind again and again, correcting mistakes she hadn’t noticed before.

By the time sleep took her, her body was still, but her thoughts were sharp.

  Ray, meanwhile, finally noticed.

  The looks.

The whispers that stopped when he passed. The conversations that resumed just a heartbeat too late. The way eyes followed him—not in awe anymore, but in judgment.

He entered the inn and ordered a simple meal.

The waiter’s eyes were cold. Professional. Sharp.

The bar owner didn’t bother hiding his disapproval, arms crossed as he watched from behind the counter.

  Ray sat alone.

Every glance felt like a needle. Every murmur pressed against his skull. His mind, still half-occupied with lesson plans and corrections, struggled to process it all.

By the time he returned to his room, exhaustion finally hit.

He shut the door, leaned against it for a moment, then slid down onto the bed, hands dragging down his face.

  “…Fuck.”

The word left him raw and bitter.

  He had faced monsters.

  He had faced death.

  But this—

  this was something else entirely.

And for the first time since becoming the Brave, Ray wondered if this town would remember him for the wrong reason.
