Chapter 26: Patrol Part 1
Mr. Specter and Mr. Magician left the temple and continued up the stone stairs to the roof. Specter turned to look at the white moon in the night sky as he spoke.
“Looks like the goddess isn’t looking at us at the moment.”
Mr. Specter turned around to look at the young man behind him. He had a sad expression, and it was obvious that he was feeling down. Mr. Specter thought for a moment, what does he need to say to cheer up his partner.
In all honesty, he didn’t know what to do. Instead of trailing of by saying words of encouragement that will fall on deaf ears, Specter thought it best to be honest.
“I don’t know what you are going through. There is no manual for the mystical world. The one thing I was taught by now dead mystics are that you should take it slow and be careful when handling matters in the mystical world.
I thought losing control was a dead end. I thought that whatever waited me after losing control was death.
But here you are. Still alive. Fate seems to have a problem with you. Wherever that fate may take you, know that I will help at any time, simply ask.”
Mr. Magician looked at the blond man in front of him. He didn’t know what Mr. Specter went through to become a mystic. He didn't know anything about the mystic in front of him.
And the same could be said by the other person. They didn’t know each other. They only knew the surface level of information about each other.
However, that wouldn’t stop them from not trying to learn of each other. Mr. Specter may not have said it out right, but he wanted to be friends, he wanted to be comrades in the world full of mystical knowledge and danger.
Mr. Magician reached out his hand, intended to go for a handshake. Mr. Specter caught on and grabbed the purple robed man’s hand and shook it fervently.
…
Some time passed and the pair of mystics started their patrolling route. They used the roofs to hide themselves from preying eyes, but the real reason was that Mr. Specter preferred the roof tops.
They moved at high speed, and their jumps had no trouble covering a large distance, more than enough to jump from roof to roof. They could even cross a wide street with one jump. Mr. Magician was a bit on edge, but it soon subsided as they continued their route.
“This feels off.”
“What? Why?”
Specter scratched his head. He had a feeling that something was out of place, but he didn’t find anything abnormal. Mr. Magician took out the coin he got from Mr. Specter and did a divination.
“According to the divination, something is abnormal. However, the divination statement is too abstract.”
Mr. Magician made a simple coin divination, he asked if something abnormal was happening on their route. The question leaves too many openings for the two of them to figure out anything substantial.

“Try to divinate if there is any abnormality caused by mystical influence.”
After hearing Mr. Specter’s idea, Mr. Magician nodded and proceeded to try it. The coin flip divination proved unsuccessful as it fell to the roof floor instead of into Mr. Magician’s hand. Specter clicked his tongue as he started to brainstorm once again.
The two of them was standing on a rooftop far away from the detective agency. Mr. Magician was lost in thought as he noticed something was off with his divination… The divination failed, but why does it feel like the time the Silver Moon interrupted my divination?
Mr. Magicina remembered what happened yesterday. The goddess of the silver moon interrupted his divination when he was about to divinate if he should take on the commission from officer Williamsson or not.
“Mr. Specter!”
“Huh? What?”
He was still unsure, but Mr. Magician decided to share his thoughts with his partner.
“You think that someone is interfering with your divination?”
“Yes! I know that it is possible, but I wasn’t using a method that would cause an entity to hear my divination. I was channelling the spirit world but nothing else. I first thought that it was anti-divination. However, on this scale, is it even possible?”
The two of them pondered for a moment and agreed that they were on to something, but what.
According to all of their divinations, they were simply paranoid or somehow the whole street had an anti-divination characteristic. But they were sure that they were on to something, they could feel it.
“What are you doing?”
“Huh? My lady?”
Specter wrinkled on his face, as his confusion was clearly visible. It didn’t take long for him to slowly understand why Magician had called out “My Lady”.
“I greet the Silver Moon!”
“Good morning, little Specter!”
Mr. Specter groaned in disgust of his nickname. While holding back his laughter, Mr. Magician asked a question to the silver moon in the sky.
“Is there a way to interfere with divination that doesn’t target a specific being and on the scale of a whole street?"
“And what makes you think I will answer that? Have you already forgotten what I had said?”
Mr. Magician groaned. He was hoping for an answer but instead had to remember the fact that the goddess refused to answer any questions that the Magician had.
Now he was getting paranoid about who he was. Mr. Magician shuddered… Am I still in a state of losing control?
The ethereal voice spoke again.
“But I am in a good mood. A long answer short, yes. There are multiple ways to hide from divination, becoming completely invisible is difficult and all options are lengthy and problematic.
Becoming invisible is not really worth it. But simply interfering with divination is much easier and completely within the means of any mystic.
Magician, I won’t tell you how but just know that there are multiple ways to interfere with divination. I am going now!”
“Yes, farewell my lady!”
Mr. Magician and Mr. Specter bade the lady of silver farewell. The two of them turned to each other and the first one to speak was Mr. Magician.
“I will use divination, asking the same question for each building, when the divination fails, we will know the general area of whatever it is that interferes with my divinations.”
Mr. Specter nodded and then added something to Mr. Magician’s plan.
“If someone notices that we are looking for them, they may decide to look for us. I’ll hide us with an illusion.”
The plan has started to take form as the partners prepare for their respective parts. Mr. Magician started divinating if there was any anomaly in any of the buildings around them.
After little more than 30 minutes, they had found the building that interfered with divination. The divination on the on the 11th building failed, but Mr. Magician didn’t want to overlook the other buildings, so he divinated with them as a target as well.
“What now?”
Mr. Specter asked with a brisk voice. Mr. Magician looked at his partner when he spoke.
“Now we search like non-mystic would.”
Mr. Specter groaned and started looking around, in hope he finds something suspicious. The two of them jumped down from the rooftops and landed gracefully. Jumping from two story houses poses no threat to mystics of their strength.
“This will take a while.” Mr. Specter made a sigh and started looking around.
