Chapter 16: Gourmet
Anti-Divination spirit characteristics are able to hide the entity from prying eyes. While it isn’t invisibility, the appearance of the entity will be rather hard to recognize, remember, and even perceive.
Non-mystics are unable to recall things such as the hair colour of the mystics that have Anti-Divination characteristics. Some churches describe Anti-Divination characteristics as camouflage in the mystical world and civilian world.
Anti-Divination characteristics act as a wall that blocks divination from completely or successfully finding the entity. It can also protect the mystic from receiving attacks from other entities when performing divination.
“Dweller of the crystal eye.
You who is carried by a young magician in purple.
Reveal the location of the masked man in white that killed a man in the east district. He who had a tear beneath his left eye!”
Mr. Magician closed his eyes after reciting his divination statement. When he opened them again, he saw pictures flash before his eyes, the northern district street names inhabited by mostly nobles, flashy balls, large banquets with delicious looking food as far as the eyes can see, and lastly hundreds of people in ceramic masks partaking in all that is offered.
Magician’s heart raced, at first, he didn’t understand why, but his intuition and the feeling in his stomach told him something about the people and the food they were eating…Disgusting.
As to not catch the attention of someone powerful, Mr. Magician terminated the divination and woke up in the real world. He saw his pendant levitating in front of his eyes with a lustrous glow.
The light emitted by the pendant slowly diminished and it stopped levitating. Mr. Magician let out a sigh of relief when he noticed that he was out of the way for any possible danger.
“How did it go?”
A calm but monotone voice filled Mr. Magician’s ears. He turned his head and saw Ms. Silver standing to his side. She had expended a small amount of spirituality to keep the room soundproof and had kept an eye out for any sign of danger her partner could be facing whether it was in the dream divination or the real world.
Mr. Magician explained what he saw in the divination and noticed one problem with his findings.
“I didn’t see the man in white suit with a tear under his eye. Even though I found his general location, the noble district, I still couldn’t specifically find him.”
As a commoner, it wasn’t unusual for Mr. Magician to call the northern district as the noble district. Mostly nobles lived there, and it was a place deemed impossible for a commoner to live in.
Ms. Silver paused before speaking.
“You did well. Even the fragmented visions are helpful. But...” Ms. Silver stopped speaking, she looked at Mr. Magician with a worried look.
Mr. Magician felt uncomfortable, not only had he heard Ms. Silver speak with full sentences for some time now, but she also showed emotions on her face and made minute changes to her facial expression.
Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
Quite frankly, Mr. Magician was unsure why she suddenly changed, it worried him.
Ms. Silver looked at the young man in front of her, though she was an incredibly experienced mystic, she still had her moments of worry and fright. She decided to ask Mr. Magician a question to confirm her hypothesis.
“Were you hungry?”
“Pardon?”
Mr. Magician answered back in surprise which prompted Ms. Silver to repeat her words with more details.
“Did you feel hungry, when you looked at the food on the banquet tables?”
Ms. Silver looked at the young man with a scrutinizing gaze. The young man looked shocked but understood what she was implying.
The shock on his face vanished as a nefarious smile not belonging to the young man appeared as he answered her question with a calm tone.
“Well of course. Huh?”
The boy staggered back, holding one hand over his mouth. He started to breath heavily as more and more saliva built up in his mouth.
This wasn’t the first time Ms. Silver had seen a similar scene, but this was the first time she had seen someone holding back his desires and scrutinizing his own thoughts.
The young man started shaking and felt how other entities within him awakened from their sleep. The expression shown on the young man’s face shifted from horror to pure bliss then to a dazed expression and then back to horror. As if made of porcelain Mr. Magician's skin started to crack.
Ms. Silver recognized the signs of a mystic losing control immediately. She started to think about a way to calm or subdue the young man in front of her. She knew that talking to the young man would amount to nothing. As she was cued by someone, she knelled and then started praying with an ethereal voice.
“Lady Darkness, You That Carved Fear into Humanity
Lady Light, You Who Watches Over Humanity High Upon Your Silver Palace
Lady Hope For all Eternity
I, your Saintes, pray that you cast Your Gaze over this lost soul and purge him from Desire and Madness!”
An ethereal light enveloped the young man in black and purple. His breathing stabilized and sanity returned to his eyes. Worry washed over his face as it started healing at an unnatural speed.
Ms. Silver was about to say something but instead let out a sigh of relief when she noticed the young man regain his composure on his own. After taking a moment for him to calm down, Mr. Magician asked Ms. Silver a question.
“What happened, were I attacked in the divination?” He asked.
“No, you experienced the same thing that happens when you let your desires go uncontrolled, but that wasn't what happened this time. The scenery you saw with the help of divination must have been a bit much for your current mental state.”
A faint smile appeared on Ms. Silver’s face. After a short break, the duo returned to discussing about the banquet and the people participating.
“They are called Gourmet. A sect without a god and saint. Think of them as a club for twisted and difficult to kill mystics.
They hold banquets and balls as if they are mimicking high society and then devour dishes made of civilians that they have murdered.”
Ms. Silver’s explanation was short but informative. Mr. Magician noticed something worrying and asked a question.
“They all eat humans? Does every one of them have desires for cannibalism like me?”
“No! They are nothing like you!”
Ms. Silver was quick to answer with the most emotion she has ever shown. Her anger was visible, after sighing, she continued explaining.
“Desires can be changed, but you only have one option to choose from, cannibalism. The greatest taboo an intelligent species can perform.
We don’t know how or why, but it is possible. They either choose it or were forced into cannibalism. But show no pity for them, just like you, they aren’t forced to kill to quench their desire.”
Ms. Silver sighed and thought about their next course of action. After a moment of contemplation, she opened her mouth to speak.
“Let’s return. We have nothing more to gain here and there is no way for us to capture the Gourmet member involved in this case. I will talk with the police lieutenant, you wait out in the carriage.”
“Understood!”
Mr. Magician made his way back to the carriage. He greeted Andrew and said that Ms. Silver would return shortly. While sitting in the carriage, he placed his face in his palms and let out a sigh.
With his thought in a disarray, Mr. Magician did his best to convince himself… I am different I am different I am different.
…
“I was such a child back then. Breaking down over something like that.”
The man floating in empty space scoffed as he continued to speak to himself.
“It must have been back then he started to take root."
