“I would think so. Why? Want to stop for something?” Valgrin answered.
Malcolm surveyed their surroundings, noting how the bright moonlight reflected off of the jagged mountains and towering rock formations that created a natural fortress. "This spot looks defensible. Not to dark or shadowy. Haven't had a chance to check my status since everything kicked off. Got some unread notifications piling up, and I've noticed a few changes—that second lightning orb, for instance. Plus, wouldn’t mind resting a bit. I know we’re not that far away, but not sure we should go and wake Ylnah’s dad up."
Valgrin shrugged and plopped down, his back to stone. “Sold me on looking at notifications. I got some catching up to do too. As far as resting here til morning. As a father, I can assure you that Brechin is awake or sleeping so lightly that everything has woken him up. I’d say sit here for awhile then we go even if it’s still dark.”
The group followed Valgrin’s lead and found a place to sit.
After a few seconds of silence, Ylnah’s squeal drew everyone’s attention to her. “I’ve gone up a level. Increased my magic pool. I haven’t gained a level that fast ever.”
“What level and what did it get you?” Valgrin asked.
“I’m level four now took me over a year to get to three, and that was only a few months ago.” She paused, a faraway look in her eyes. “Looks like I’ve got a whole thirty-five points to spend. Need to think on where though. I need to up some stats I’ve not spent much on, like strength and endurance. And need to keep putting some in intelligence and wisdom to support my magic. Oh, I got a buff on my air-based magic, picked up a ten-point bonus in magic pool for air focused magic.”
“You get magic points specific for your spells?” Malcolm asked.
“Not normally. Full Chavorians can get the buffs as early as third level, most often either fourth or fifth. My mother got a small buff at second level, then a larger than usual at third. I was hoping I’d get one by fifth, being half-Chavorian the buff usually comes later than average, if it comes at all.” Ylnah stopped to take a deep breath. “Sorry, I’m just excited this level up and buff were so unexpected. Oh, also, the buffs can only be used with your area of focus, which is why I got the air one. Oh, again, sorry I’m not used to explaining this to anyone, the buffs don’t come every level up, they are on their own schedule and the formula…”
This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it
“Is not disclosed, right?” Valgrin broke in, nodding. “We have a few of those.”
“Yeah, that’s right. Which is why I wasn’t sure if and when I’d get it.”
Malcolm stood, moving to sit at a stone next to Ylnah. “So, you get magic specific to the ways you can use it—is it air because you have a lot of air-based spells, or is it everything?”
“It’s air, may get energy magic buffed at some time since it’s my secondary. Chavorians can specialize in a few types of magic, when you specialize, the buffs become possible. To answer your next question, the types available to a Chavorian are the base elements—air, earth, fire, and water. Along with those, we have energy and health available to us. Energy is a bit odd, it includes force, light, dark, and some other areas in it. I don’t know for sure, but I’d guess energy magic is a primary for Skwilly.”
“Don’t know anything about specializing in energy. I have magic, and it does things with light, like other priggys. Could be we naturally have a specialty. Looking at my status, it tells me I’m learning to speak like you guys, simple stuff now, but continued study may allow me to speak and understand without magic.”
“Great news, Skwilly.” Valgrin reached over and scratched behind the priggy’s ear.
“I’m not sure I fully understand mine,” Malcolm stated. “Some I do, increase in Guardian Sense, somehow got two Lightning Flashes per day, those make sense. Not sure how the spell increased without going up a level. However, my Healing Touch moved from a spell to an ability, and I can now use it to heal a lot more and up to five times a day. Let me pull it up and read it to you.”
Sandy, please show me just the Healing Touch ability. Once displayed Malcolm read it to the group.
<
Healing Touch — has migrated from spell to ability
5xDay – heal up to thirty-five points (points healed and frequency advances with level and wisdom score)
~~Can heal wounds and repair bones if used for cumulative effect (formula not disclosed)
(The underlined are the areas of change.)

“Has migrated from spell to ability. You went from external to internal magic use. Internal makes more efficient use of the magic energy. Don’t know that you’ll get a buff, but it’s why Chavorians do.” Ylnah paused then looked at the ground. “The internal magic thing, that is. Sorry, I blurted out.”
“Pfff,” Malcolm put a hand on her shoulder. “I put something out there and you answered, nothing wrong with that. Thank you for explaining. May need a little more at some point. Oh, and I have a new spell taking the slot Healing Touch took, it’s called Unseen Bridge. Basically if I use it, I can’t sink.”
“Glad to hear y’all sharing what you got.” Valgrin smiled at the group. “I didn’t increase anything, but have notification that my repathing of Trancing into my ability channeling has progressed. Have no idea what exactly that means, other than I’ve been able to get extra magic to flow through my katar a couple of times. I’ll need to do some more research there. Anyway, lets rest for a bit then head back to Ylnah’s. This close to a bed, the ground doesn’t seem so great.”
