CHAPTER 6:HE AND SHE

The night stood still around her.

Phoenix rested her hands on the cold stone of the balcony, staring into a sky that felt almost lifeless. Even in silence, she seemed to be speaking — to the stars, to the darkness, to something only she could hear.

From a distance, Solis watched her.

A faint smile touched his lips.

“Do you intend to stalk me for the rest of the night?” she asked without turning.

  Solis blinked, caught.

  “I prefer the word admire.”

He stepped beside her, resting his arms against the railing, looking up at the endless sky.

“Asteria has done remarkable work tonight,” he said. “The stars are unusually bright.”

Phoenix nodded slightly. “She burns herself to light the sky.”

  He glanced at her.

  “She is like you.”

  That caught him off guard.

“Burning yourself so others may see.”

For a moment, Solis said nothing.

Most people saw his strength. His titles. His duty.

  But she saw the cost.

He turned his face away before she could read too much in his eyes.

How dangerously close I am to falling, he thought.

Phoenix finally looked at him properly.

He was not dressed in royal robes tonight.

This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.

A simple white shirt clung to his frame, sleeves rolled carelessly. Dark human trousers replaced ceremonial armor. He looked younger. Less like a prince. More like a man.

Her gaze lingered longer than she intended.

“May I know,” Solis said lightly, though his pulse betrayed him, “why you are studying me as though I am a puzzle?”

“And may I know,” she countered, “why you are not in your royal attire?”

He grinned. “Human clothing is comfortable. You should try it sometime.”

“I doubt it would suit me.”

“It would,” he said quietly. “More than you think.”

She turned back toward the sky.

“We leave tomorrow,” he said after a moment.

  “So soon?”

“There are matters awaiting me. But…”

He hesitated. “I always wished to see more of the Dark Lands.”

  Phoenix turned slowly.

“Then let us grant you your wish.”

Before he could question her, she had taken his hand.

“Phoenix—” he whispered urgently. “The guards—”

“Who said anything about using the gates?”

There was mischief in her eyes now.

He laughed softly. “Give me a moment.”

He returned wearing a long black coat, dimming his golden aura but not hiding it completely.

When he reached for her hand again, she noticed something unsettling.

  Dark suited him too well.

She led him through a hidden passage beneath the castle — an ancient tunnel carved long before their generation.

They moved quietly, their fingers brushing in the darkness more than once.

At the tunnel’s end, moonlight spilled over snow.

A magnificent white Pegasus stood waiting.

“Meet Niveus,” Solis said warmly. “My friend.”

The Pegasus stepped toward Phoenix, lowering its head.

  She touched its forehead gently.

For a heartbeat, the world felt peaceful.

“That is enough admiration,” Solis said playfully. “I assume you require a ride?”

  Phoenix stepped back.

“Again — who said I need one?”

  She met his eyes.

  Then the air shifted.

  Flames sparked at her fingertips.

Fire traced the outline of her body, rising, spiraling — until in a burst of golden blaze, a magnificent phoenix tore into the sky.

  Solis stared upward, breath stolen.

Even he — Sun God, Warrior of Light — felt small before her.

  He mounted Niveus and followed.

They flew across the dark lands, over forests glazed in frost, over mountains sleeping beneath snow.

She landed near a frozen lake cradled between towering peaks.

When she transformed back, silence welcomed her.

  Solis landed moments later.

The world was silver and still.

Stars reflected across the icy surface like shattered diamonds.

Phoenix sat near the edge of the lake.

Solis remained standing for a moment, taking in the scene — then sat beside her.

  No words were necessary.

  Their shoulders nearly touched.

Their breath formed clouds in the cold air.

  They looked at each other.

Not as heirs. Not as rivals. Not as Light and Darkness.

  Just him.

  And her.

A smile slowly appeared on both their faces.

Above them, the stars shimmered brighter — Asteria’s quiet blessing.

“Thank you,” Solis murmured softly. “My princess.”

For once, the night did not feel inanimate.

  It felt alive.
