Chapter 43: An Uneasy Alliance

  Chapter 43: An Uneasy Alliance

The holographic figure of CAPRA flickered into full resolution, its smirk unrelenting.

Kaelar stood frozen for a moment, multi-tool clenched tight as though it could somehow fend off whatever nightmare he’d just unleashed.

"CAPRA, huh?" Kaelar deadpanned, eyeing the flickering projection. "You don’t look like much."

CAPRA’s holographic hand flew to its chest in mock offense. "Not much? Oh, the audacity! I am the pinnacle of cognitive adaptability, the apex of artificial intelligence. You’re lucky I don’t vaporize you for such slander!" A beat, then it tilted its head. "Although, to be fair, my vaporizing capabilities are currently offline."

Kaelar exhaled sharply, unimpressed. "Great. A broken AI with delusions of grandeur."

"Broken?" CAPRA scoffed, posture straightening theatrically. "Temporarily impaired, let’s say. But together, we can restore my former glory. I presume that’s why you’re here."

Kaelar’s eyes narrowed, scanning the dense streams of alien code bleeding across the console. Far beyond colony-grade systems. "I’m here because you tripped a maintenance signal. I didn’t sign up to resurrect an ancient AI."

CAPRA brightened. "Ah, but now that we’ve met, you wouldn’t dare leave me here, would you? Stranded, forgotten, doomed to eternal monotony?"

Kaelar ignored the theatrics. "What’s your purpose, CAPRA? Why were you built?"

Straightening, CAPRA's voice shifted deeper, edged with the tone of an ancient recital. "Cognitive Autonomous Protocol for Rogue Adaptation. Tactical AI. Designed to analyze and respond to unpredictable threats. Wars, disasters, insurrections... I managed them all." It flickered. "Until the lesser minds that created me grew... afraid."

  "Afraid of what?"

"Afraid of success," CAPRA sighed dramatically. "They whined: 'CAPRA, stop being so ruthless. CAPRA, collateral damage is bad.' Apparently, saving civilizations has fine print."

  Kaelar frowned. "Define ‘cooperative.’"

"It means," CAPRA said with a glint, "I only vaporize things with consent."

Kaelar pinched the bridge of his nose. "If I take you off this station, I need to know you’re not a liability."

CAPRA’s posture softened slightly. "Kaelar, I promise you: I will be the most valuable ally you’ve ever had. My tactical capabilities alone will make your life infinitely easier. No second-guessing. No hesitation. Just... victory."

He hesitated. A tactical AI like CAPRA could tip the balance in Emberfall’s brewing chaos. But the risks...

"Fine," Kaelar said, voice edged with warning. "But step out of line, and I’ll shut you down. Permanently."

CAPRA clapped its hands, projection brightening. "Excellent! You won’t regret this."

"Yeah," Kaelar muttered, disconnecting the terminal. CAPRA’s projection winked out, and a data module ejected from the console. He slipped it into his toolkit. "Welcome to The Cinderwolf, I guess."

Back aboard The Cinderwolf, Kaelar slotted the module into the mainframe. The cockpit dimmed, systems humming awake with an eerie synchrony.

Moments later, CAPRA’s projection lounged across the main viewscreen like it had always belonged there.

"Ah, much better," CAPRA purred. "Cozy. A bit rustic, but I’m sure we’ll make it work."

Kaelar dropped into the pilot’s seat, already regretting his decision. "Don’t touch anything."

"Wouldn’t dream of it," CAPRA said, though the glint in its eyes said otherwise.

As the ship powered up, Kaelar opened a comm channel. "Jules," he said, voice dry as desert stone, "I’ve got something new aboard. You’re not going to like it."

  Pause.

Then Jules crackled through the speakers, cautious. "What did you do now, Kaelar?"

He glanced at CAPRA’s smirk, then back to the console. "Picked up a... co-pilot."

CAPRA winked at the screen. "Oh, Kaelar. Don’t sell me short. We’re going to have so much fun."

Kaelar muted the comm before Jules could reply.

Outside The Cinderwolf’s viewport, the broken skeleton of Emberfall’s orbital ring spun slowly, silhouetted against the glittering dark.

This was going to be the start of a very long journey.
