the dragons tomb (log 118)

Well, I have managed to outrun the Navoks. Well, they tried their best. I had not expected them to follow after us for long. After all, if the ships are needed at the wall, they can't be removed from there for long. Also, based on their skill with those ships, they won't survive being far away from their base.

Still, the promptness with which they ran away surprised me. Well, I think surprise is the wrong word. I am warned by the speed with which they ran. It feels like they were running away from the maw of a tiger. If that is the case, then we are charging into the maw of a tiger even as we speak. Every instinct of mine is telling me that I should be running away right now. That the place is going to be dangerous.

This has reached a point where even the slightest noise is triggering me into a full-blown panic attack. The only problem with that is that I can't figure out why I feel like this. I have been thinking about this in every way that I can think of. I can't figure out how exactly we could be in danger going to the place. There is obviously danger in coming. Everything that I have seen till now makes it clear that the tomb is the safest option that I have right now.

The first thing I did was to talk to the lady who suggested the place to me in the first place. The vampire seems to be confident that we will be safe in this place. I have grilled the lady in every direction that I can think of. If she were lying, then I should have detected something in my line of questioning. (That is the hope, at least.) I am sure that I have learned everything that this lady knows about the tomb.

Well, that is not something to boast about, though. The lady doesn't actually know a whole lot about the place. None of the vampires at her level do, for that matter. The only person who had any idea about the place was this lady's master.

It was her master who had noticed this place in the first place. He had made the archer stop in this place for a couple of hours. He wasn't particularly forthcoming about why he was interested in this place. We (and by extension her), know that the man almost spent two hours in this place.

During this period, the man had gone alone into the tomb. Once he returned, the man claimed that this place could be used as a safe place for the vampires. That even if the locals in the casino were to chase after them, they would not dare to come here. That this place might just be the safest place to hide in the bone pits.

Beyond this, the lady doesn't know anything. She has no idea of what danger could be present in this place. She claims that her master did not speak about this place much. Only that it could be a possible safe place. Not that I am going to believe her for even a minute.

There is a pretty good chance that the lady could be withholding information. After all, vampires are creatures that are experts in subterfuge. (Even against each other.)

The only reason that I have stopped questioning the lady is because the searchers took her. Ultimately, the location of this "disciple's tomb" is more important.

At least the lady doesn't seem to be willing to cause any problems with that. Based on everything I have been hearing (From Trevor), it is clear that work is happening smoothly.

I guess that I should explain what astral coordinates are. It is not something that you usually learn unless you are working with some kind of summoning, after all.

Astral coordinates are basically runic coordinates of a place. Everything in every plane can be represented as an astral coordinate. That is why otherworldly creatures (such as demons or fairies.) tend to add their astral coordinates to their summoning circles.

That way, anybody can summon them with little risk. Now, I can recognise astral coordinates, but I certainly can't decode them. The astral coordinates that the lady need to be broken down into a simpler set of coordinates. (such as the one my sensory formations use.)

Well, I won't be trusting the lady until the necromancers are defeated. (Well, I won't be trusting her after that as well.)

Well, regardless of how trustworthy the lady is, she is our only option. After all, if we don't go to this dragon's tomb, I don't know where else we can go. I have exhausted everything that she has told me about the place. As I said, it was not much.

That is why I have been doing research of my own. I have been studying dragon tombs. Now, there is not much that we know about the dragons. We only know that they are an ancient race. They are supposed to be even older than the elves.

If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Their tombs are a different thing, though. That is something that the scholars have studied a lot. The reason for that is how dangerous a dragon's tomb tends to be. They say that every dragon has a tomb prepared for themselves. The tombs are usually protected by magic that makes even the scholars wary.

This only applies to the tomb itself, though. As long as we remain outside the place, there is a pretty good chance that we shall face no danger. At least, whatever threat exists in a dragon tomb is inside the place. (At least that is the popular consensus among the scholars.)

Other than that, we cannot discount the fact that there shall be undead attacking us even there. After all, the undead chasing after us are creatures of instinct. Still, they should be manageable. After all, even the undead are unlikely to come to a place that kills them instantly.

Right now, we are making our plan on this assumption. We are going to camp outside the dragon's tomb. Just close enough that we don't get stuck in the defenses of this place.

I will begin work on repairing the ship. We did take quite a few hits, which might get worse with time. The searchers will work on decoding the astral coordinates. The remaining people of the group will focus on defending us.

Well, to speak of the plan in short, it sounds pretty safe. At least as safe as it can get in this undead-ridden hellhole. Still, there is something wrong. The only issue is that I don't know what it is. Well, regardless of what it is, we can't stop moving. After all, we finally have a target to aim towards. Giving up would mean that we would lose our opportunity to attack the necromancers.

To stop now would make all of our work till now useless. Also, there is the issue that I need to recharge my ship as well. It is not going to be an issue immediately, but it is not something I can keep ignoring. Well, I have spoken about everything that I know about the place that we are going to. I will continue this log when I finally end up at the dragon's tomb.

(After about a couple of hours.)

Well, I can finally see the dragon's tomb. Well, seeing would be the wrong term. After all, the place is a blur on the edge of my sensory formations. Even as I get closer to it, the place is getting clearer, though.

The weirdest thing that I can feel about the place is the fact that I cannot feel any mana or the place. Well, don't get me wrong, I can feel mana in the place. It is death mana. Well, this is disturbing news. We will have to modify our plans quite a bit.

"Amelia, go to the Sentinels and inform them that the dragon's tomb is full of death mana." I say the lady. "We won't be able to follow our present plans. Tell them to go with our backup plan."

She doesn't question me as she hears this. Well, I guess I should explain why this is important. You see, the dragon's tomb is supposed to have defenses in place to prevent what is in front of us. Defenses that prevent any external mana from flowing in. (Even death mana.)

The mana signature of the tomb is supposed to be very different from the mana surrounding it. The fact that this is not the case means that the defenses here have been damaged in some way. That immediately increases the complexity of our plans. Well, we were prepared for this, thankfully. Still, this doesn't bode well for us.

Well, I have finally gotten close enough to the place that I can see it a bit more clearly on the sensory formation. I have to admit that I was expecting to see something a bit more impressive than the sight in front of me.

I had been thinking that the tomb would stand imposing against the sky. That it would stand as a challenge, daring anybody to challenge it. The place in front of me looks exactly the opposite of that. From how far away I am from the place, it looks like a tiny anthill. The only proof that this is the dragon's tomb is the location that Esmeralda had inscribed in my sensory formation.

The two of them overlap so absolutely that it is clear that this is the tomb. Still, I am not going to be one to underestimate the place. After all, this is a place that even scholars don't dare to enter without preparation. There must be a reason for that. Well, I have finally gotten close enough to the place that I will be able to land the ship. I am going to land the ship a bit farther from where I had originally planned to do.

It is going to be very risky getting too close to the tomb, right now. After all, we don't even know what is in the tomb. Based on that, I have already begun to modify my landing path.

At least there don't seem to be any strong undead in this place. I can spy a couple of them from the edge of my vision. None seems strong enough that a well-placed cannon shot can't kill them. I am charging my cannons even as I record.

After all, what idea do we have about what could be hidden in the tomb itself? (Mana signatures from the tomb are supposedly highly untrustworthy.) We certainly don't want to be caught off guard once we land the ship. (That would be the perfect opportunity to be ambushed.)

Let's just hope that John got the message. Right now, he is the man who needs to be ready. He is presently commanding a combined force of Sentinels, Mayfires and Searchers. (You can count the vampire also if you wish.)

As for the Aegis, they have taken to doing their own thing. They are certainly not going to listen to the Sentinels. Let them do their own thing. It is not like anybody is going to listen to the Aegis right now.

Let's just hope they do nothing too crazy. The man is moving about with the fury of a man with something to prove nowadays. That is when men do the stupidest things, I have noticed. By the way, while I have been recording all of this, I have been steadily tipping the ship downwards. I guess that I could be a bit quicker, but the death mana in the place has spooked me quite a bit.

Anyway, it is not like I will gain anything by being impatient. Okay, I will make a log when we have settled in the camp (or when things inevitably go wrong and we have to run for our lives.)
