233: Flight Risk

“Have you ever been on a flight before?”

“What?” Ever looked away from the window, where the clouds scudded by in the airplane’s slipstream.

“I said,” Zoe leaned in right next to Ever’s ear. “Have you ever been on a flight before?”

“Oh right.” It was his turn to bring his mouth close to her. “I did, once. I had to reap someone who had died while he was on the way to visit his newborn granddaughter.”

“No way!” Zoe said, hand rising to her mouth.

“Yes. I’ve also flown through the sky quite a few times.”

“Right, because why wouldn’t you if you could just turn into a virtual ghost?”

  “Exactly.”

“I mean, you could go right now if you wanted to.”

Ever shook his head. “I can do that anytime. How often can I fly with you?”

“Right answer.” Zoe wrinkled her nose while smiling, also lacing her hand with his and resting it on the armrest between them. She lay her head on his shoulder as some minor turbulence rocked them.

“Hey I wanted to ask…” Ever pulled his phone out of his pocket. “Is there a way that I can message someone while I’m on a flight?”

Zoe looked at his screen, seeing that her boyfriend had sent “Hello, are you there?” to a girl that wasn’t her: Taylor. She stiffened.

“I thought she was in Mexico.” She pulled her hand away from his.

“She is,” Ever replied. “At least, I think she is.”

  “Why are you messaging her?”

“I spoke with Logan earlier. He hasn’t been able to get a hold of her. He wanted me to try.”

“Surely he could ask someone else.” Ever had to lean in to hear her.

  “He’s asked me though.”

She stared straight ahead. While he couldn’t hear the sigh, he did notice her chest lift and fall heavily.

  “What is she to you?”

  “What do you mean?”

“I mean,” Zoe still wouldn’t meet his eyes, “do you have feelings for her?”

Ever looked out the window. They were flying amidst the clouds now. A few drops of water streaked across the glass.

“I did have feelings for her a long time ago. But then she hurt me.” At these words, Zoe looked back at Ever.

  “How?”

Ever’s brows knitted together as he broke the seal on the memory and the emotions came flooding back. Zoe stayed silent as he recounted what had happened that day.

“So that’s what I walked in on that day. No wonder the vibes were so off. Still don't know why your boss suggested we all sit together to have ice cream, it was awkward as hell.”

There was an announcement from the pilot; the seatbelt lights had turned on as they begun their descent.

“You’re my girlfriend, she’s my friend,” Ever said.

“No, I know. I’m not stopping you from who you choose to be friends with.” She shuffled closer to Ever, threading her hand through his once more. “I’m just happy that you’ve chosen me.”
