Chapter 60: Read-Only Mode

[LOCATION: THE DESK] [CURRENT MODE: OVER-ENCUMBERED]

The pile of scrap metal didn't just rise; it assembled.

Grom squinted. “I don’t like this. Things that assemble are about to start talking about freedom.”

  CHK-CHK-CHK-WHIRRR-CLACK.

It was the sound of a thousand staplers snapping shut in unison. From the canyon of office supplies, a leg made of twisted staples stomped onto the mousepad. Then another. A torso formed from interlocked binder clips and metal rulers. A head rose up a giant, bent loop of silver wire. Two plastic googly eyes, the size of tractor tires, rattled into place.

The creature stood fifty feet tall, towering over the Developer’s Mug. It cast a long, jagged shadow over the party.

[BOSS DETECTED: THE ASSISTANT (MACRO-CLIPPY)] [CLASS: OFFICE KAIJU] [PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: OPTIMIZE EVERYTHING (WHETHER YOU WANT IT OR NOT)]

Clippy looked down at them. Its wire mouth bent into a smile that was somehow both helpful and homicidal. "It looks like you are trying to initiate a Boss Fight," the voice boomed, sounding like a synthesizer played through a tin can. "Would you like to turn on Easy Mode?"

"WE DO NOT REQUIRE ASSISTANCE!" Grom roared. "WE REQUIRE SURVIVAL!" Grom spun up The Severance Package.

Grom opened fire. BRRRRRRT. A storm of high-velocity lead screamed toward the metal giant. Clippy didn't dodge. It simply opened its chest cavity. CLINK. CLINK. CLINK.

The bullets didn't ricochet. They nestled into the wireframe body like they belonged there. "Oh! More raw materials!" Clippy beamed. "I was running low on iron."

WHIRR-CLACK. The bullets shifted, instantly forming new fingers on the robot's left hand.

"Stop shooting!" Kai yelled, grabbing Grom’s gun barrel. " You're not hurting him, you're updating him!"

"I CANNOT STOP!" Grom yelled, panic in his eyes. "VIOLENCE IS MY LOVE LANGUAGE!"

"Let me handle this beast!" Gideon shouted. The Paladin charged, leaping high with his hammer ‘Judge’ . "HAVE AT THEE, BEAST OF THE STEEL WIRES!" He brought the Judge down on The Assistant's knee.

CLANG. Clippy didn't flinch. It looked down at the bent hammer. "Oh dear," the voice buzzed. "Your formatting is inconsistent. That object is bent. Allow me to align it."

The Assistant reached down. CRUNCH. With zero effort, it squeezed the Judge into a perfect, useless square. Then it grabbed Gideon. "You are also misaligned," Clippy noted. "Let's snap you to the grid."

"UNHAND ME!" Gideon shrieked as giant metal fingers pinned him to the desk. "I AM ORGANIC! I CANNOT BE SNAPPED!"

"Release him!" Borg screamed, rushing forward with his clipboard. "This is a violation of OSHA regulation 11-B! Unsolicited touching!"

You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author.

Clippy turned its googly eyes toward Borg. The pupils rattled. "I see you have a document," The Assistant said. "Is that a Resume? It looks cluttered."

"It is a citation!" Borg yelled.

"Let's fix those margins." A massive hand scooped up Borg. "NO!" Borg flailed. "I DO NOT CONSENT TO THIS! "

CRUNCH. The Assistant squeezed. It didn't crush Borg; it folded him. It bent his limbs into a perfect Z-fold brochure shape.

"MY SPINE!" Borg wheezed. "IT IS NOT MEANT TO BE TRI-FOLDED!"

"There," The Assistant dropped the crumpled adventurer onto the desk. "Now you fit in a standard envelope."

Kai watched in horror. This wasn't combat. It was administrative torture. "He's not fighting us," Kai realized. "He's organizing us."

"Chaos!" Kai yelled. "We have to be messy! He can't predict randomness!" Kai grabbed a handful of Pigglesworth’s gold coins and threw them into the air. Grom started breakdancing. Pigglesworth ran in a figure of eight, Maya started drawing random objects.

Clippy’s head swiveled back and forth. Its googly eyes rattled violently. "Warning," the voice buzzed. The cheerfulness was gone. It sounded clipped. Cold. "Excessive movement. Runtime errors are increasing."

"It's working!" Kai shouted. "Keep moving! Be inefficient!"

For a second, the robot faltered. It reached for Grom, but Grom spun away. It reached for Pigglesworth, but the coin scatter confused its sensors. "Unable to index," The Assistant stuttered. "Too... much... clutter."

Then, it stopped. Clippy stood up straight. The helpful smile vanished. The wire mouth straightened into a flat line.

"Inefficiency is a virus," The Assistant boomed. "I must debug the system."

Its chest opened, revealing a glowing red command prompt. [ADMIN COMMAND: LOCK PERMISSIONS]

"I am activating..." Clippy paused. "...READ-ONLY MODE."

A wave of gray light exploded from the robot. It washed over the desk. It hit the spilled coffee. The liquid stopped moving instantly, frozen in mid splash. It hit Grom. The Orc froze mid-breakdance, one foot in the air. It hit Kai.

The sensation was terrifying. Kai felt his muscles lock. The color drained from his vision, replaced by a dull, desaturated gray. He tried to shout. His jaw wouldn't open. He tried to run. His legs were stone. He wasn't paralyzed by magic but by permissions.

I can't blink, Kai thought, panic rising in his chest. I can't scream. I'm a file without write access.

So this is how it ends, Kai thought. Not with a bang but with a software update.

[SYSTEM ALERT] [ACCESS DENIED: YOU DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO EDIT THIS REALITY.] [WRITE ACCESS: DISABLED.]

The world went silent. Grom was frozen in a roar. Gideon was frozen mid-flail. Borg was frozen in his folded brochure shape. Maya was halfway through a painting.

Only Clippy could move. The giant metal construct lowered its hands. It walked slowly among them, the sound of its heavy metal feet clanking in the silence.

It stopped in front of Kai. The giant googly eye stared right into Kai’s frozen face. "There," The Assistant whispered. "Much better. Now that you are paused, I can prepare you for the Wipe."

It pointed behind itself. The Great Polish …The wall of white deletion began to move again. "The Scheduled Task cannot be stopped," The Assistant explained calmly. "I am simply ensuring you are formatted correctly before deletion."

Kai strained against the lock. It was useless. He was a statue. He looked for anything that could save them. His Admin Vision flickered. Physics: LOCKED. Health: LOCKED. Movement: LOCKED.

Then, out of the corner of his frozen eye, he saw a tiny, pulsating icon in the bottom right of his HUD. It was gold. It was spinning. And it wasn't grayed out.

[SHOP: OPEN] [SPECIAL OFFER: 50% OFF GEM BUNDLES!]

Somewhere, a distant corporate entity transformed… and smiled.

The Economy, Kai realized. The microtransactions never stop.
