Dawn broke over the ridge, painting the eastern watchtower in shades of gold and rose. Aarav had not slept. His mind raced through possibilities, threats, strategies—the Iron Vanguard's surviving members, Commander Valeria's mythical talent, the dwindling crystal reserves that limited his evolutions.
Seven crystals left. Three hundred fifty mana. Enough for one more watchtower, but nothing else.
That had to change today.

Thorn found him at the wall, sketch in hand. "The western tower site is ready. Same as yesterday—good foundation, clear sightlines, plenty of loose rock."
Aarav nodded. "Let's do it before we leave. I want the camp as secure as possible while we're gone."
They walked to the western flank, where Thorn had prepared the ground. The location was perfect—a rocky spur overlooking the valley, with a clear view of the approach and the forest beyond. Any enemy coming from that direction would be visible for kilometers.
Aarav surveyed the materials. Loose rocks, a few fallen trees, solid bedrock beneath. Same as yesterday.

Three hundred mana. Six crystals. He had seven.
He crushed six crystals, feeling the familiar surge of power. He placed his palm against the largest rock formation and activated his talent.
The rocks shifted, rose, and grew—just as they had yesterday. Stones stacked themselves with impossible precision, forming a tower five meters tall with a platform at the top, a ladder, arrow slits, and a signal fire pit. Within seconds, it was complete.

"Two towers now. Nothing moves within five kilometers without us seeing it."
Aarav checked his remaining resources.

One crystal left. Fifty mana. Almost nothing.
He needed to find more. Today.
---
Velira and Tarak were waiting at the wall, ready to move. Seraphina briefed them quickly.
"Three hours. That's all the time I can spare. If you're not back by then, I'm sending a rescue party." She looked at each of them. "Stay together. Stay quiet. Don't engage anything you can't handle. Find crystals and come back."
They nodded and moved into the forest.
---
The forest was alive with sounds—birds, insects, the rustle of small animals. Velira led, her shadow-walking making her nearly invisible. Tarak flanked, his speed allowing him to scout ahead and return in seconds. Aarav stayed in the middle, protected, his eyes scanning for crystal formations.
They found the first deposit within thirty minutes—a small cluster of three crystals, unguarded, nestled at the base of an old oak.

Four crystals. Two hundred mana. Still not enough.
They pushed deeper.
The second deposit was larger—five crystals—but guarded. A pair of dire bears, D-rank, slept near the formation, their massive bodies blocking access.

Two D-rank creatures. They couldn't fight them—not quietly, not without risking injury or death.
"Can we go around?" Aarav whispered.
Velira studied the terrain. "No. They're blocking the only approach. We'd have to circle half a kilometer, and there's no guarantee we'd find another path."
Tarak spoke up. "I can distract them. Lead them away. You two grab the crystals and run."
Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit.
"Too risky," Aarav said. "If they catch you—"
"I'm faster than they are." Tarak's confidence was absolute. "I've been doing this my whole life. Trust me."
Velira looked at Aarav. "It might work."
Aarav considered. Four crystals. Two hundred mana. Worth the risk?
"Yes. But be careful."
Tarak grinned and was gone.
Seconds later, a rock flew through the air, striking the nearest bear in the flank. It roared, lurching to its feet. The second bear woke, confused. Tarak appeared briefly, taunting them, then vanished into the trees.
The bears charged after him.
"Now!" Velira moved, faster than Aarav could follow. He ran after her, reaching the crystal formation, grabbing crystals as fast as he could. One, two, three, four, five.
All five.
They ran.
---
They found Tarak a kilometer away, leaning against a tree, breathing hard but grinning.
"Lost them in the ravine. They're still looking." He held up his hand—three crystals. "Found these while I was running. Bonus."

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Twelve crystals. Six hundred mana. Success.
They had been gone two hours. One hour left to find more.
---
The third deposit was a gift—six crystals in a clearing, completely unguarded. Almost too easy.
Aarav's instincts screamed trap.
"Wait." He held up a hand. "Something's wrong."
Velira faded into shadow. Tarak vanished into the trees. Aarav pressed himself against a rock, watching.
Thirty seconds passed. A minute.
Then movement. Figures emerging from the forest—five Lords, surrounding the clearing. The Iron Vanguard.
Commander Valeria stepped forward, her glowing sword in hand. "I knew you'd come. Crystals are the only resource that matters in this competition. Leave a few unguarded, and someone will eventually show up to take them."
She smiled—cold, triumphant.
"And here you are."
---
Aarav's mind raced. Five Lords. Commander Valeria (C-rank, Time Slip). Four others—two D-rank, two E-rank. He had twelve crystals but no evolutions left today. Velira and Tarak were hidden, but outnumbered.
They couldn't fight. They had to escape.
But how?
Valeria raised her hand. "Search the area. They're here. I can feel them."
The Iron Vanguard spread out, moving methodically through the forest.
Aarav pressed deeper into the shadows, moving slowly, carefully. One wrong sound, one misplaced step, and they were dead.
Velira appeared beside him, materializing from shadow. "There's a ravine fifty meters east. Steep slope, but we can slide down. They won't follow—too risky."
"Tarak?"
"Already there. Waiting."
They moved.
---
The ravine was a crack in the earth, twenty meters deep, with steep walls of loose rock and dirt. Tarak was already at the edge, motioning urgently.
"Hurry. They're close."
Aarav looked down. One wrong move and he'd fall, break something, die.
But staying meant dying for sure.
He slid.
Rocks and dirt cascaded around him as he descended, barely controlling his speed. He hit the bottom hard, pain shooting through his ankle. He bit back a cry.
Velira landed beside him, graceful as a cat. Tarak followed a second later.
Above them, voices echoed. The Iron Vanguard had reached the ravine.
"They went down there," someone said.
"Let them go. We're not climbing down that deathtrap." Valeria's voice, cold and dismissive. "They'll have to come out eventually. Post watches at both ends. We'll wait."
Aarav's heart sank. Trapped. Surrounded. No way out.
---
They found a small cave in the ravine wall and pressed into it, hiding from view. Twelve crystals in Aarav's pouch. No evolutions left. No way to fight.
"We're trapped," Tarak whispered.
"Not yet." Velira's voice was calm. "We wait. They'll get bored eventually. Or they'll think we found another way out. Or something will happen."
"What something?"
"I don't know. But we're not dead yet."
Hours passed. The sun moved across the sky. Shouts echoed occasionally from above—the Iron Vanguard changing watches, discussing plans, getting bored.
Aarav counted his crystals obsessively. Twelve. Six hundred mana. If he had an evolution available, he could do something—create a distraction, a weapon, an escape route. But he had used his for the day.
The rules. The damn rules.
He thought of Kiri, of Elara, of Tessa. He thought of his family. He thought of all the reasons he had to survive.
Then he had an idea.
"Velira. Can you reach the team? Send a message?"
"Not directly. But I can get close enough to the ridge to signal them. If I can get out of the ravine."
"How?"
"There's a climbable section a hundred meters east. Risky, but possible. I'd have to leave you here."
Aarav considered. If she left and they were discovered, he and Tarak would be dead. But if she succeeded, the team could come, create a distraction, give them a chance.
"Do it."
Velira was gone.
---
The waiting was agony.
Minutes crawled past. Every sound from above made them flinch. Every shadow could be an enemy.
Then, an hour later, chaos erupted.
Shouts, screams, the clash of weapons. From above, they heard Valeria's voice, enraged. "It's a trap! They brought reinforcements!"
Aarav grabbed Tarak. "Now. Move."
They ran along the ravine floor, following Velira's directions, reaching the climbable section. It was steep, dangerous, but possible.
They climbed.
Hand over hand, foot over foot, pulling themselves up as the battle raged above. Rocks crumbled beneath their grip. Sweat stung their eyes. But they climbed.
They reached the top as the last of the Iron Vanguard fled—routed by Seraphina's angels, by Marcus's axe, by the full force of the Angelic Vanguard.
Seraphina stood among the wounded, her blade bloody, her eyes finding Aarav immediately.
"You're alive."
"We are." He limped toward her, pain flaring in his ankle. "Valeria?"
"Escaped. Again." Seraphina's jaw tightened. "But she won't try this again. Not soon."
Aarav looked at his teammates—bloodied, exhausted, but alive. He looked at the crystals in his pouch—twelve, safe, ready for tomorrow's evolutions.
He had survived.

The Price of a Fortress
Aarav’s base is now 90% fortified, but he’s learned a bitter lesson: A fortress is a cage if you don't have the strength to leave it. He’s currently limping, the Iron Vanguard is still breathing down his neck, and he has exactly 12 crystals to his name.
Day 5 will be the "pivot point." Does he double down on more stationary defenses, or does he finally evolve something mobile to ensure he’s never trapped in a ravine again?
Comment Challenge: Aarav has 1,004 total mana. For Day 5, should he evolve the "Ravine Path" to create a secret escape tunnel, or should he evolve Tarak’s "Speed" boots to turn his scout into a supersonic messenger?
