Chapter 9: The Competition Begins

  ---

The three days before the competition passed in a blur of desperate preparation.

Aarav threw himself into work alongside his people, determined to leave the valley as strong as possible before he was taken. The barracks rose from its foundations on Day 23, its rough timber walls a testament to the villagers' determination. By evening, it stood complete—modest, unimpressive, but functional.

  [ AETHEL - DAY 23 ]

  [ LOCAL TIME: 19:47 ]

  [ MANA POOL: 104/1200 (BASE) + 49 CRYSTALS (2450 STORED) ]

  [ EVOLUTION AVAILABLE: 1/1 ]

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Aarav stood before the new barracks, Kiri at his side, and considered his options. He had one evolution left before the competition—one chance to improve his territory before he was taken.

The wall was now fully repaired, thanks to the villagers' labor. The guard tower stood ready. The children's hall had walls and a roof, though Tessa insisted it wasn't finished yet.

But the barracks was empty. No soldiers. No defenders beyond Elara and Kiri.

  He made his choice.

  [ AETHEL - EVOLUTION PROTOCOL ]

  [ TARGET: BARRACKS (F-RANK) ]

  [ PROJECTED OUTCOME: BARRACKS (E-RANK) ]

  [ COST: 200 MANA (E-RANK BUILDING = 200 ×1.2 STRUCTURE MODIFIER = 240, WAIT—RECALCULATING]

Aarav paused. The math wasn't matching.

  [ AETHEL - COST CALCULATION ]

  ├─ BARRACKS CURRENT RANK: F

  ├─ TARGET RANK: E

  ├─ BASE COST FOR E-RANK: 200

  ├─ STRUCTURE MODIFIER: ×1.2

  ├── TOTAL COST: 240 MANA

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Two hundred forty mana. He had 104 base and 49 crystals. If he used one crystal, he'd have 154 base + 2450 stored = 2604 total. Enough.

He placed his hand on the barracks wall and activated his talent.

Power flowed—gentle this time, focused. The rough timber smoothed and darkened, becoming denser, stronger. The roof reinforced itself. The interior spaces expanded slightly, creating room for more recruits, better training.

  [ AETHEL - EVOLUTION COMPLETE ]

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

  [ BUILDING: BARRACKS (F-RANK → E-RANK) ]

  ├─ NEW PROPERTIES:

  │ ├─ DAILY RECRUITS: 5 → 10 E-RANK SOLDIERS

  │ ├─ RECRUIT QUALITY: IMPROVED (10% CHANCE FOR D-RANK)

  │ ├─ TRAINING SPEED: +25%

  │ └── CAPACITY: 20 → 50 SOLDIERS

  ├── MANA COST: 240

  ├── BASE MANA REMAINING: 104 - 140 (USING 1 CRYSTAL) = -36? NO—RECALCULATING...

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

He had used one crystal (50 mana) plus 190 of his base mana. New base: 104 - 190 = -86? That didn't work.

Wait—he had 104 base. He needed 240 total. He used one crystal (50), leaving 190 to come from base. 104 base wasn't enough.

  He'd need two crystals.

  [ AETHEL - ADJUSTED MANA USAGE ]

  ├─ EVOLUTION COST: 240

  ├─ CRYSTALS USED: 2 (100 MANA)

  ├─ BASE MANA USED: 140

  ├─ BASE MANA REMAINING: 104 - 140 = -36 (NEGATIVE—IMPOSSIBLE)

This wasn't working. He couldn't use more base mana than he had.

Frustrated, Aarav did the calculation again. He had 104 base. He needed 240 total. The maximum he could contribute from base was 104. That meant he needed 136 from crystals.

Three crystals (150) would cover it, leaving 14 mana wasted. Two crystals (100) left him 36 short.

  Three crystals it was.

  [ AETHEL - EVOLUTION COMPLETE ]

  ├─ MANA COST: 240 (3 CRYSTALS = 150 + 90 BASE)

  ├─ BASE MANA REMAINING: 104 - 90 = 14/1200

  ├── CRYSTALS REMAINING: 49 - 3 = 46 (2300 STORED)

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The barracks stood transformed—stronger, larger, ready. Tomorrow, he could recruit his first soldiers.

  If he was here tomorrow.

But the competition started at dawn.

  ---

Day 24 dawned cold and clear.

Aarav stood in the barracks courtyard, watching as Varen organized the first recruitment. Ten villagers had volunteered—farmers, woodcutters, even one of the hunters. They lined up nervously as the System processed their enlistment.

  [ AETHEL - RECRUITMENT ]

  ├─ BARRACKS (E-RANK): 10 RECRUITS AVAILABLE TODAY

├─ COST PER RECRUIT: 30 FOOD, 15 GOLD

  ├── TOTAL COST: 300 FOOD, 150 GOLD

Food they had. Gold they didn't.

Aarav checked his resources. Zero gold. In twenty-four days, he hadn't found a single gold coin, hadn't established any trade, hadn't built any economic buildings.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

"Lord." Elara appeared at his side, reading his expression. "The crystals. Seraphina gave you fifty. Gold is just another resource."

"You're suggesting I trade mana crystals for gold?"

"I'm suggesting you have assets. Use them." She pulled a small pouch from her belt. "I have seventy gold saved from my previous summons. It's not much, but it's a start."

Aarav stared at her. "You'd give me your gold?"

"You've given me reason to stay." Her loyalty score flashed in his interface—95/100. Near absolute. "Consider it an investment."

They pooled their resources—Elara's 70 gold, and one mana crystal traded to a wandering merchant who happened to pass near the valley (Seraphina's angels had spread word that this territory was open for business). The merchant gave 200 gold for the crystal—a fair price, Elara said.

Two hundred seventy gold. Enough for today's recruits, with some left over.

  [ AETHEL - RECRUITMENT COMPLETE ]

  ├─ 10 E-RANK SOLDIERS RECRUITED

  ├─ COST: 300 FOOD, 150 GOLD

  ├── NEW MILITARY: 10 E-RANK SOLDIERS + ELARA (C) + KIRI (D)

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Ten soldiers. Not enough to stop an army, but enough to patrol, to guard, to give warning. Enough to make the valley feel defended.

Tessa found him as the sun began to set.

"Lord Aarav? You're leaving tomorrow, aren't you?"

He knelt to her level. "For seven days. Maybe less. The competition—"

"I know. The grown-ups talk about it." She looked at the carved wolf she had given him, now hanging from his belt on a leather cord. "You have Kiri's brother with you. So she'll know you're safe."

Aarav's throat tightened. "That's... that's exactly right. He'll watch over me, and Kiri will watch over all of you."

Tessa nodded solemnly. "I'll make sure the children's hall is finished when you get back. Marta promised we could paint it whatever colors we want."

  "What colors are you choosing?"

"Blue. Like the sky. And gold. Like Kiri's eyes when the sun hits them."

  Aarav smiled. "It sounds beautiful."

  ---

  The night was restless.

Aarav lay in his hut, Kiri curled beside him, unable to sleep. His mind raced through possibilities, strategies, fears. What would the competition be like? Would he survive? Would he see his family—his mother, father, sister—somewhere in the billions of Lords?

  Kiri whined softly, pressing closer.

Worried, she sent through their bond. But not afraid. You are strong.

  "I don't feel strong."

You are. You saved us. You built us. You are Lord.

He scratched behind her ears, feeling the warmth of her fur, the steady beat of her heart. Whatever happened in the competition, he would fight to return to this—to her, to Elara, to Tessa, to all of them.

  ---

  Dawn came too fast.

  [ AETHEL - DAY 25 ]

  [ LOCAL TIME: 06:00 ]

  [ LORD RANKING COMPETITION - PHASE 1 BEGINS IN 15 MINUTES ]

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Aarav stood at the valley's center, surrounded by his people. Eighty faces—old, young, wounded, hopeful—all looking at him with the same expression. Trust.

Elara clasped his arm. "Seven days. Survive. Come back."

  "I will."

Varen nodded, his weathered face set in determined lines. "The valley will stand, Lord. I swear it."

  "I know."

Kiri pressed against him one last time, her golden eyes holding his. Through their bond, he felt everything—her love, her fear, her absolute certainty that he would return.

Come back, she sent. Pack needs you.

  "I will."

  The sky shimmered.

LORD RANKING COMPETITION - PHASE 1 BEGINNING.

ALL LORDS WILL NOW BE TRANSPORTED TO INDIVIDUAL TRIAL REALMS.

  PREPARE.

Aarav looked at his people one last time—at Tessa clutching her mother's hand, at Elara standing tall despite her worry, at Varen with tears in his eyes, at Kiri watching him with absolute devotion.

  Then the world dissolved.

  ---

He fell through light and color and sound, the same sensation as his first summoning but faster, more urgent. Realms flashed past—forests, deserts, mountains, oceans—each one containing thousands of Lords beginning their own trials.

  Then he hit ground.

  Hard.

He rolled, instinct taking over, and came up in a crouch with his hand reaching for a weapon he didn't have. The carved wolf swung from his belt, a small comfort in the chaos.

He was in a forest. But not any forest.

The trees were wrong. Their trunks twisted in impossible angles, their leaves shimmered with colors that hurt to look at, and their roots... their roots moved. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, but definitely moved.

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Eight hundred forty-seven Lords in one forest. Seven days. Only one rule: survive.

Aarav checked his interface for Kiri—and felt the bond go silent. Not broken, just... distant. Frozen. She was waiting for him in the valley, suspended in time until his return.

  He was alone.

  [ AETHEL - CURRENT STATUS ]

  ├─ HOST: AARAV OF ORION

  ├─ MANA POOL: 14/1200 (BASE) + 46 CRYSTALS (2300 STORED)

├─ EVOLUTION AVAILABLE: UNLIMITED (OUTSIDE TERRITORY)

├── NOTE: 2x MANA COST, NO LOYALTY BOND FOR EVOLUTIONS HERE

Fourteen base mana. Forty-six crystals. Enough for multiple evolutions, but at double cost and without loyalty, every evolution was a gamble.

He needed to move. Standing still in a place like this was death.

Aarav looked at the twisted trees, at the moving roots, at the shadows that seemed to shift when he wasn't looking directly at them.

  Seven days.

  He started walking.

  ---

The first hour was the longest of his life.

Every shadow seemed to move. Every sound made him freeze. He had no weapon, no armor, no allies. Just fourteen base mana and a pouch full of crystals that might as well have been rocks if he couldn't use them.

  Then he saw it.

A crystal formation—three meters tall, pulsing with soft blue light. It looked almost like the mana crystals he knew, but larger, more... alive.

  [ AETHEL - ENTITY ANALYSIS ]

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

[ TARGET: CRYSTAL SENTINEL (DORMANT) ]

  ├─ RANK: E (ELITE)

├─ STATUS: INACTIVE (CAN BE AWAKENED)

  ├─ AWAKENING METHODS:

│ ├─ TOUCH (RISKY - MAY ACTIVATE HOSTILE)

  │ └── EVOLUTION (70 MANA - 140 OUTSIDE TERRITORY)

├── IF EVOLVED: BECOMES ALLIED CRYSTAL SENTINEL (E-RANK)

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

One hundred forty mana. He had fourteen base. He'd need three crystals (150) to do it.

But an allied sentinel—a scout, a guard, a fighter—would be worth the cost.

Aarav pulled three crystals from his pouch, crushed them in his palm, and felt the mana flow into him. One hundred fifty temporary mana, added to his fourteen, giving him one hundred sixty-four total.

He placed his hand on the crystal and activated his talent.

Power flowed—different here, wilder, less controlled. The crystal shuddered, cracked, then split. From within emerged a creature of pure crystal—humanoid, faceless, beautiful. It turned to face him and waited.

├── LOYALTY: NEUTRAL (NO BOND - EVOLVED OUTSIDE TERRITORY)

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━`

Neutral. It would follow his commands for now, but if a stronger Lord appeared, it might switch sides.

  Better than nothing.

"Scout ahead," Aarav ordered. "Find threats. Find resources. Find other Lords."

The sentinel moved silently into the trees.

Aarav followed, one hand on the carved wolf at his belt, his eyes scanning constantly.

  Seven days.

  He would survive them.
