Chapter 4
Now, like you, I don’t remember my first day of school that well, but from what I know from my children’s first day and the vague memories of mine, this was not what I expected. I started the day, today, as usual. I woke up, got dressed, did a morning workout, ate breakfast, and started to go towards the library. My mother, however, called out to me before I could.
“Jorth! Are you ready for your first day?” I swear, she was more excited about me going to school than I was.
“Yes, mom. I can hardly wait,” I replied dryly. Individuals are fine, but when you get large groups of them together, and start separating them, they become very insular and hard to deal with.
"Good, follow me." Now, of course, as a grown man in a child's body, my initial instinct was to refuse. However, as I still have some sanity left, I followed. "We can't have you wearing that on your first day of school! Come! We're going to find proper attire in your closet, not those rags you insist on wearing every day."
"Mom! It's just going to get dirty, why bother?"
"We have a reputation to uphold, dear. Now, how about this one?" She held out what could have passed as a three-piece suit. Dark slack-like pants, a white button up collared shirt, and a dark dress jacket.
"Mom! No one is going to be wearing that on the first day of school."
"Maybe not, but you will. Now, get dressed! We don't have much more time before we need to be there."
"Yes, mother" I sighed, beginning to strip off my comfortable clothes, and putting on the supremely uncomfortable ones. I was in for a day of taunts and name-calling, I could tell. Oh well, I was likely the strongest of my age group, so I doubted anyone would try something more than once.
Thirty minutes later, my mother walked me into the school. It was nothing like the schools I remembered. There were no classrooms, no auditorium, no hallways. It was a giant library. scattered around the library were different groups. Each one had a sign. Mathematics, History, Geography, Finances, even some basic sciences. One, however, caught my eye immediately. Introduction to Threads, must be thirteen.
This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there.
"Mom! Why is Threads limited to 13 year olds?" I asked.
"No one quite knows, but I suspect that is the earliest one can unlock the potential, if they have it." Little did she know, I had already unlocked it.
She took me to my first class, history, and introduced me to the teacher. "Mrs Burn, I'd like to introduce my son, Jorth. Jorth, this is your first teacher, Mrs Burn."
"Hello" I simply said.
"Such a handsome young man! We have plenty to teach you, though you're a little younger than the usual history student. Your mother stated you could read pretty well, so you should be able to keep up"
"Yes ma'am" I replied, keeping it short and simple until I knew whether this was a waste of time or not.
"I'll see you later, Jorth, and we can discuss your day," Mom said, turning around to leave.
I looked around me, and many of the kids within eye-shot wore comfortable clothing. Most in this class were also a few years older than I. I suspected, this was going to be a huge chore.
I spent the day listening to history I had already read regarding the Emperor, and what came before. I didn't talk to anyone, answered briefly when asked a question, and only half listened to the lecture. As the day wore on, and we stayed in the same class, I began to think, while the setting was different than how we did it on Earth, school was still just as boring here.
"...Now, no one quite knows what the Emperor's name is, or what year he was born, but everyone knows he's a couple thousand years old at the minimum. And without him, we'd still be fighting each other. North against East, South attacking West. He united the kingdoms, and the world, into what we have today."
While I didn't learn anything in History, I did overhear a few older teen students talking about threads.
"...I still can't sense them, can you guys?"
"Not I, but the Weaver says it takes time to unlock the ability. I'm still struggling to empty my thoughts to feel the Power Font."
"Oh, I got that the other day. It's extremely eye opening when you feel it. I can't wait until I can reach out to it and touch it!"
They kids moved too far away to hear, at this point, but it was interesting information, nonetheless. Not that I couldn't do all of that, but knowing I was way ahead of their class was a huge ego boost.
After class, mom came to pick me up and asked me about my day.
"History is boring, I know all of this already," I replied.
"I know, dear, but the new knowledge should be coming up soon. Just be patient. Did you make any friends?"
"No, mom, I'm younger than anyone else, so no one tried to talk to me."
"Did you try talking to them?" She asked, knowing full well that I didn't.
"No, mom" I mumbled.
"Exactly."
