Chapter 11

  Paul

Paul rolled his shoulders and stepped forward with confidence.

He didn't say anything right away — just stood there, staring at his hands.

"Don't need a speech then?" Lee asked.

Paul didn't even look up. "Nah."

Liam raised an eyebrow. "Go on then, let's see what the king of PvP pulls out the bag."

Paul exhaled sharply through his nose. "Yeah, yeah. Biggest spell so far, coming right up."

He tried to imagine something — anything. A fireball, maybe. Like in fighting games or MMOs. That felt right. Straightforward. He didn't need a spell book or lore or anime. Just power. Something he could launch. Something direct.

He pictured a source of heat in his chest, rising to his fists. Imagined the shape of it. Ball of flame. Centre mass. Forward force. Nice and simple.

He clenched his fists and focused.

  Nothing.

He opened his eyes, frowning. "Right. Okay."

He tried again, same approach. Visualized harder. Concentrated on the feeling of heat, the image of fire bursting from his fist.

  Still nothing.

"Come on," he muttered, frustration creeping in. He tried a third time, and this time he actually *felt* something—a warmth building in his chest, like the magic was almost there—but it fizzled out before anything manifested.

"Fuck's sake," he growled, shaking out his hands. His competitive nature hated losing, hated not being able to do something, especially something that *should* be simple.

I mean Lee and Parmo got it, that means I can do it. It's easy.

"Having trouble, mate?" Liam called, barely concealing a smirk.

Paul shot him a look. "Shut up."

"He's getting wound up," Lee said, grinning.

"Your gunna end up being our support at this rate dude," Parmo added. "It's all good man, me and Lee will protect you."

Paul opened his mouth to fire back, but stopped himself. He was letting them distract him, and that was doing exactly what they wanted. He was letting them wind him up.

He took a breath and refocused.

This time, he didn't try to force it. He didn't get angry or desperate. Instead, he let the competitive drive take over. That calm, zen state he got in when he was playing to win. The part of him that knew he was good at things and expected to succeed.

He planted his feet, raised his fists in a fighting stance, and pictured it clearly: fire erupting outward, powerful and under his control. Not desperate or angry but focused and intentional. He was going to punch forward, and a fireball was going to shoot out of his fist. It was going to be sick. It would shut the idiots behind him up.

  I'm going to do this.

A flame ignited in his chest.

Then heat rushed down his arms.

For a moment, nothing visible happened. Then he threw a punch and a ball of flame erupted from his hand, a bright orange flash that lit up the area him and the boys were standing in. It travelled in a straight line for a few seconds before it dissipated into black smoke and faded away in the breeze. It wasn't huge, really just a tiny ball of fire, but it had worked. Real fire, hot enough that even the boys a few metres away felt the heat.

Paul stared at his hands, breathing hard. Then he turned to the others.

"Fucking get in. See that? That's how it's done! "

  Once more, a chime sounded.

Paul read through the tab, then looked up at the others. "It worked."

Lee grinned. "Yeah, we saw that, mate. Nearly set the grass on fire."

"So what was different?" Ste asked, genuinely curious. "Was it 'cos you were frustrated before? Maybe the emotion was wrong?"

Paul shrugged, still processing what had just happened. "I stopped trying to force it. Just... focused. Knew I could do it, so I did."

Liam nodded. "That's a thing then. It's not really about how hard you try. It's about knowing you're going to succeed. You need to have the right mind set, idea, and at least something to compare it to."

"Competitive determination." Parmo said. "Makes sense for you, honestly."

Paul looked down at his palms again, flexing his fingers experimentally. "Fire is cool. I know it says something about fire not restricting spell development, but for now, that's going to be my thing I guess."

"Looks like it," Lee grinned. "Fiery and aggressive. Fits you with your temper."

Paul grinned slightly. "Yeah. Yeah, I can work with that."

Ste stood, stretching out his back. "Alright then. My turn. Let's see what I get."

Paul stepped back, giving him space. "Have fun. Don't go fusing atoms or some shit."

  ***

  Ste

Ste stepped forward without fanfare. He didn't posture or crack jokes. He just moved to the spot where the others had stood and drew in a slow breath.

Liam gave him a nod. "You got this dude."

"Yeah," Ste said. "Let's have a go."

He didn't go with Lee's wide exploration or Parmo's singular focus. He didn't have Paul's competitive drive. He needed to think smarter about what he actually wanted.

Chemistry and principles had been his approach before. He'd thought knowing how things worked would help him cast something, but it hadn't. All that logic hadn't clicked.

So this time, he'd try something different.

He closed his eyes and thought about what he was actually good at. Not as a chemical engineer, but as a person. D&D campaigns and strategy games were his forte. He liked preparing the battlefield before anything started. He liked the setup and control.

If he wanted to set traps, he needed to think bigger. Control the space first, hide what he was planning, create perfect conditions for the trap to snap shut.

Fog, he thought. I can cover the ground to hide what's underneath. It's also going to be useful for other stuff. I could use it to cover people's eyes if I get enough control over it. Stuff like that. It's a good foundation for everything else.

He opened his eyes, settled into that calm strategic focus, and raised his hand.

With a slow breath, he whispered, "Sublimate."

A thin, cool mist began to rise, not from his fingertips but pooling gently around his feet, swirling in a small circle on the grass, slowly spreading outward. It was subtle, a soft blanket hugging the ground, like early morning fog creeping over the hills.

Ste's eyes followed the mist as it curled and shifted.

*I'll need to practice this. Control where it lies, how dense it is in places, thicker in some, thinner in others. When it spreads. I can lead people with this, not just hide traps.*

He looked up at the group.

"Doesn't seem like much yet, and it's not as flashy as yours," he said, voice steady. "I think if I get a handle on this though, it's going to be super useful."

"I know how evil you can be as DM, dude. No further explanation needed," joked Lee.

"Yeah, imagine walking through that when it's everywhere. Suddenly, pit trap. Or a bottomless hole. Or one of those trip wires tied to two giant logs that smash you," said Liam.

"Jesus," grinned Paul. "That's scarier than Parmo's ability to create a snowman on command..."

"Woah," Parmo cried, "fuck you, dude."

A soft chime broke through the group's banter.

Ste exhaled, blinking as he read through the new tab. "Alright, that's promising."

Liam smiled, looking thoughtful. "All these styles coming together… might actually work."

Ste gave a small grin, feeling the faint mist swirl lightly at his feet again. "Yeah. It's a start. I'm just glad it's not super flashy and attention grabbing. I'll save that for you lot — fuck pointing out where I am to a dragon or something."

Parmo gulped. He hadn't thought that far yet.

The group chuckled, the tension from the failed attempts earlier easing as the experiments continued.
