Bunny Apocrypha 10: The Howard Anxo

  (A Nature Documentary, As Observed)

  JAKE (whispering, reverent):

Here we observe Howard Anxo in his natural habitat.

  TRENT:

Which appears to be… a folding chair.

Howard sits in the shade beside a truck, hands folded, eyes half-lidded. He is not asleep. He is simply not participating.

  JAKE:

The Howard Anxo is a solitary creature. Highly territorial about nothing in particular.

  TRENT:

  Not aggressive, though. Defensive, maybe.

  Howard shifts slightly. Jake freezes.

  JAKE (hushed):

  Did you see that.

  TRENT:

  Yes. A posture adjustment.

  JAKE:

That usually means something’s about to happen.

  Nothing happens.

  JAKE:

Note how he conserves energy. This is not laziness. This is efficiency refined over decades.

  TRENT:

His heart rate appears unchanged despite environmental stimuli.

A loud crash echoes from somewhere behind them. Howard does not react.

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

  JAKE:

Fascinating. Lesser organisms would turn their heads.

  TRENT:

The Howard Anxo already knows what it was.

Howard takes a sip of coffee.

  JAKE:

The species is known for minimal vocalization.

  TRENT:

But when it does speak, nearby activity often ceases.

  Howard glances at them.

  “Why are you whispering.”

  Jake nods solemnly.

  JAKE (still whispering):

  He’s aware of us.

  TRENT:

  That was inevitable.

Howard sighs. “I can hear you.”

  JAKE:

In moments like this, the Howard Anxo may issue a warning call.

  Howard does not.

  He looks at his watch.

  TRENT:

Interesting. He’s choosing not to engage.

  JAKE:

  A classic dominance display.

“That’s not a thing,” Howard says.

  JAKE:

Notice how he denies the premise.

  TRENT:

This is a known behavior. By refusing the frame, he avoids expending effort.

  Howard stands.

Both Jake and Trent go silent.

  JAKE (awed):

  Oh wow. He’s standing.

  TRENT:

  This usually precedes movement.

Howard walks three steps, adjusts a cable, and sits back down.

  JAKE:

  False alarm. A maintenance action.

  JAKE:

Some believe the Howard Anxo once ranged far beyond this territory.

  TRENT:

  Migration patterns are unclear.

  Howard looks directly at them.

  “Stop.”

  They stop.

Not because he raised his voice.

  Because he didn’t.

  JAKE:

  And there it is.

  TRENT:

  The signal.

  Howard picks up his coffee.

  “I’m going inside,” he says.

  He leaves.

  Jake exhales.

  JAKE:

  Did you feel that.

  TRENT:

  Yes.

  JAKE:

  We should not follow.

  TRENT:

  Agreed.

They wait a respectful amount of time.

  Nothing happens.

  JAKE (quietly):

  A remarkable creature.

  TRENT:

  Endemic.

  JAKE:

And best observed from a distance.

They pack up an imaginary camera.

  The folding chair remains.
