[Kira POV] Year 2, Day 168-169
Kira was tired.
Not physically—the seed had made that nearly impossible. Her body could work for days without rest. Her stamina was superhuman now.
But mentally? Emotionally? Exhausted.
They'd returned to Borderwatch hours ago. Teleportation had helped—jumped to the closest anchor point—then the Twins had transformed to dragon form and carried everyone the rest of the way. Fast. Efficient. Still took time.
Then... everything had been dumped on her.
Void had looked at the mess—at 22, at the logistics, at the complications—and basically handed it all off.
"Kira. Please. Handle this. I can't... I just can't right now."
Spy had vanished. Literally. Just stopped being visible. Still there—she'd felt him looking through her eyes a few times via the network, that strange sensation of someone else perceiving through your senses—but not participating. Not helping. Not dealing with his new worshipper.
So it fell to her.
Review 22's assets. Organize housing. Explain Ealdred's training tomorrow. Manage the zealot archmage who wouldn't stop asking if the Divine One needed anything.
22 was exhausting.
Not dangerous—well, incredibly dangerous, but that wasn't the problem. Just... intense. Devoted beyond reason. Every sentence ended with asking how she could serve better. How she could be more useful. What the Divine One truly needed.
And she wouldn't rest. Kept asking to be sent to Ealdred immediately. Tonight. Right now. Because proper training was essential for serving the Divine One correctly.
Kira had spent an hour explaining that Ealdred wasn't available tonight. That training started tomorrow morning. That 22 needed to sleep, settle in, prepare.
22 had looked devastated. Like being told to wait was a personal failure.
This is what pure zealotry looks like. And it's terrifying.
She understood now why Spy avoided visibility when possible. Having someone worship you like that—treating every casual word as divine wisdom—that would be unbearable. Better to just... not be perceived.
And the earlier incident kept replaying in her mind.
22 trying to cut her ears. Void snapping—actually hitting her with his staff. Then Null and the Twins moving. Ready to kill. Ready to destroy the threat to their master.
Kira had been standing right there. Maybe three meters away. In the crossfire zone if they'd actually fought.
I would have died. Instantly. Just collateral damage in a fight between monsters.
Her hand had been on her knives. Ready to throw. Ready to kill 22 if she pushed it.
We were all seconds from mutual slaughter. Over ears. Over stupid fucking ears.
She walked through the partially-completed building. Heading toward her room. Finally. After hours of logistics and management and dealing with impossible people.
I need rest. Real rest. Mental break. Maybe a hot bath if the temporary systems are working—
The thought derailed.
Would love real hot springs. Not obsessed like Null. Just... nice bath. Perfect temperature. Mineral water. Relaxation.
But we don't even have proper water systems yet. Because everything got tangled up in the hot springs disaster.
The guilt surfaced. Sharp. Uncomfortable.
Two years ago. Early days when she'd just started. She'd been adventuring before—knew the region. Had visited a small hot spring near the Kingdom border once. Beautiful place. Relaxing.
She'd mentioned it to Null. Casual conversation. "There's a real hot spring not far from the desert. If you ever want to try one. It's nice."
Null had gone. Visited it. Experienced real hot springs for the first time.
And come back... changed. Obsessed. Demanding that their artificial system match that quality. That perfection. That connection to something real.
For two years now, Null had rejected every design. Every proposal. Every prototype.
"Fake." "Disconnected." "Not right."
Endless redesigns. Multiple mages hired for consultation. Small prototypes built and discarded. Money hemorrhaging into a project that never satisfied.
And Void never challenged it. Never pushed back. Just accepted Null's demands and kept trying to meet them.
If I hadn't suggested that visit... if Null had never experienced real hot springs... we'd have the artificial system completed by now. Working. Functional. Good enough.
Instead we've spent fortunes chasing perfection. And now we're betting everything on a maybe. On 22's desperate promise that engineering the ley line might—might—be possible.
She felt the weight settling. Heavy. Uncomfortable.
This is partially my fault. I created this problem.
She reached her door. Finally. Hand on the handle. Ready to escape. To rest. To stop thinking for a few hours—
"Lady Kira!"
No. Please. Not now.
She turned.
A maid approached. Running. Happy expression. Hobgoblin—the one from the first batch. The only survivor from those initial three seedlings. Lina. Sweet girl. Simple but earnest. One of the happy-go-lucky ones. Rare among her kind—most goblins were either stupid-aggressive or just stupid. This one was genuinely nice.
"Lina. What is it?"
"Letter for you! Just arrived!" She held it out. Excited. Like delivering mail was the best job ever.
Kira almost said to leave it in her office. Deal with it tomorrow. But then she actually looked at the letter.
Nice packaging. Quality paper. Sealed properly. Not standard correspondence.
And the logo. Embossed. Formal.
That's... that's my family crest.
Her heart rate increased. Instantly. Automatically.
Brother? After two years of silence? Now?
"Thank you, Lina. You can go."
"Okay! Sleep well, Lady Kira!" The hobgoblin bounced away. Happy. Uncomplicated.
Kira stood in the hallway. Staring at the letter. Her hand shaking slightly.
She opened her door. Went inside. Closed it.
Sat at her desk. Placed the letter down. Looked at it properly.
The address line.
Not "Kira Razorclaw."
"Kira, maid of Void."
The anger hit immediately.
Not even using my family name. Addressing me as servant. As property.
She broke the seal. Unfolded the letter. Read.
It wasn't from her brother.
It was from his servant. Elijah—some guy her brother had picked from an orphanage decades ago. Loyal. Competent. Used his proxy authority to manage things.
She'd met him before. Multiple times. Professional. Efficient. Not cruel, just... dedicated to her brother absolutely.
Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.
The letter was short. Direct. Not friendly.
Kira,
You have become a servant. Barely better than a slave. This dishonors our family. The Razorclaw name carries weight. Reputation. Your current status reflects poorly on all of us.
If you possess any remaining honor, any gratitude for the name you carried, you will cease this behavior. Find honorable work. Distance yourself from this... situation.
The family asks nothing more of you.
- Elijah Razorclaw
Kira read it three times.
Then noticed the signature.
Elijah's name. Then: Razorclaw.
He has the family name now.
Not "servant of Razorclaw." Not "proxy for Razorclaw."
Actual family name. Full adoption. Non-blood relative granted the name officially.
Her analytical merchant brain kicked in. Automatic. Processing implications.
Family names in this world weren't just labels. They were ranks. Status markers. Guaranteed by guilds. The Razorclaw name was guaranteed by the Merchant Guild—official recognition of their standing.
And there were limits. Based on family power. Wealth. Influence.
The Razorclaw family had approximately one hundred named members. Quite large. Quite powerful. Upper-tier merchant house with continental connections.
Blood relatives received the name automatically if within limits—close family always qualified, but distant relatives might not depending on total numbers and family standing.
But non-blood adoptions? Those were expensive. Incredibly expensive.
The guild charged fortunes. Required proof of resources. Verification of worthiness.
Probably ten times—maybe more—than what would have saved me two years ago.
Her brother had let her die. Refused help. Watched her fade from poison with cold calculation.
And during those same two years? Adopted someone. Paid the enormous fees. Granted family name to an orphan servant.
He had the money. Had the resources. Just... not for me.
She sat there. Processing. The betrayal cutting deeper than expected.
Then another thought occurred.
How does he even know? About my situation? About Void?
She'd kept low profile. Used the Razorclaw name sparingly—mostly never. As Void's servant, using a family name could look strange. Presumptuous. Improper.
Especially since Void didn't have one.
Did loyalty push me not to use it? The seed's influence? Or just... practical awareness?
But her brother knew. Knew she was serving someone named Void. Knew enough to send this letter.
Someone investigated. Gathered information. Reported back.
She stood. Moved to her desk drawer. Pulled out a magical communication device. Standard Merchant Guild tool—they sold information, bought information, facilitated queries.
You could also check if anyone had made inquiries about you. Past requests. Cost money, but it was available. Pay extra to hide the request, or others could see you'd checked.
She activated it. Made a query: Had anyone requested information about her in the last two months?
Longer periods cost more. Two months was what she could afford personally without dipping into Void's funds or using 22's new assets.
The request submitted. Processing. Would take time.
She set the device down. Looked at the letter again. That dismissive tone. That casual cruelty.
"Barely better than a slave."
"If you possess any remaining honor."
"The family asks nothing more of you."
Rage built. Slow. Cold. Calculated.
You left me to die. Spent fortunes adopting someone else. And now you lecture me about honor?
She went to bed. Forced herself to sleep. Let the seed-enhanced body rest even if her mind churned.
Morning came. She woke. Felt better. Rested despite the anger.
The communication device had a message indicator glowing.
She checked it.
An inquiry had been made. About forty-seven days ago. Someone had paid for information about her location and status—specifically asking if she was alive, where she was, and whether she was in slavery or similar circumstances.
The details suggested they'd found her. Located Void. Then... stopped. The investigator had apparently decided approaching wasn't worth the effort. Rumors about Void being eccentric and protective of his staff had discouraged contact.
They didn't even try. Just gathered basic information and quit.
Didn't approach Void. Didn't make an offer. Didn't attempt negotiation.
The investigator—whoever my brother hired—just gave up and reported back.
Then they sent me this letter instead.
The rage crystallized. Pure. Focused.
She pulled out quality paper. Official correspondence materials. Began writing.
To my dear brother Aldric Razorclaw,
Thank you for your concern regarding my wellbeing. It brings me great joy to know that family still remembers me after these years.
I am pleased to report that I am doing quite well. My master, Void, is generous and kind. I serve in a position of significant responsibility—managing operations of considerable scale. The work is fulfilling and my contributions are valued.
I apologize if my current station causes any concern. Please be assured that I conduct myself with the honor and competence that the Razorclaw name instilled in me. I represent my upbringing well, even in service.
In time, perhaps when our establishment is fully operational, I would be delighted to host you for a visit. You could see firsthand the quality of the operation and the caliber of people I work alongside.
Until then, I remain grateful for the education and opportunities the family provided during my youth.
With respect and warm regards,
Kira Razorclaw,
Loyal Servant of Void
She read it over. The tone was perfect. Respectful. Proper. Formal.
And absolutely insulting if you read between the lines.
The signature especially. Full family name—claiming it boldly, not apologizing for it. Then immediately after, with just a comma: her servant title.
Equal weight. Deliberate.
Her brother would understand. That she wasn't ashamed. Wasn't apologizing. Wasn't surrendering the name.
You ignored me. Let me die. Adopted someone else. Now you get a nice letter explaining how well I'm doing without you.
And I'm keeping the name. Because it's mine. I earned it. And you can't take it.
She sealed the letter. Official seal. Proper formatting.
Arranged for delivery. Merchant Guild express. Expensive but fast. It would reach him within days.
Then she sat back. Exhaled. Some of the anger releasing.
There. Handled. Professional. Appropriate.
Now I can focus on actual problems. Like managing a zealot archmage and making impossible hot springs.
She stood. Prepared for the day. Time to send 22 to Ealdred.
That's going to be entertaining.
First: collect the problem.
22 had been assigned a room in the maids' quarters. Standard accommodation—same as all the others. Private apartment with bedroom, bath, wardrobe. Comfortable. Professional.
Kira walked through the building. Found the correct door. Knocked.
It opened immediately.
22 stood there. Perfectly dressed. Maid uniform immaculate. Ear covers in place. Alert. Awake.
She didn't sleep. Of course she didn't.
"Lady Kira! Good morning! Does the Divine One require anything? I'm ready. For any task. Any service. Just command me."
"We're going to Ealdred. Your training starts today."
22's expression brightened. Pure joy. "Yes! Training! To serve properly! To be worthy! When do we leave?"
"Now."
"Perfect! I'm ready!"
They walked. 22 asking constant questions.
"Will the Divine One be present for training? Should I demonstrate specific skills? What does he value most in service? How can I—"
"22." Kira's voice was firm. Patient. Exhausted. "We need to discuss something important."
"Yes, Lady Kira?"
"Your devotion. To the Divine One."
22's attention sharpened. Focused completely. "What about it? Am I serving incorrectly? Please—tell me how to improve—"
"Outside of private moments—what we call 'play' time, when it's just us—you need to act devoted to Void instead."
22 stopped walking. Stared. "What? Why? The Divine One is my master. My purpose. I can't—"
"Nobody outside the seed bond knows about Spy. Nobody. That's deliberate. He wants it that way. Hidden. Secret. Protected."
"But—"
"If you constantly worship someone others can't see, they'll think you're insane. Completely mad. It will cause problems. Draw attention. Create complications."
22 looked conflicted. Torn. "I... I understand the logic. But I can't just pretend. Can't dishonor the Divine One by claiming someone else—"
Kira reached out through the bond. Deliberately. ?Spy. I need help. Please.?
A pause. Then—presence. Awareness.
Spy manifested. Just for a moment. Visible to 22. Floating there.
His voice was flat. Annoyed. "Do what Kira says."
Then he vanished. Gone. Back to invisibility.
22 stood frozen. Processing. Then her expression shifted. Understanding. Acceptance.
"The Divine One wants to remain hidden. Of course. Obviously. More power in mystery. More safety in obscurity. And if he commands it..." She nodded firmly. "Then I obey. Completely. I'll act devoted to Master Void in public. The Divine One's will is absolute."
Thank god. Or... thank Spy, I guess.
"Good. Remember that. Ealdred doesn't know about Spy. Nobody there does. You're devoted to Void. Understand?"
"Yes, Lady Kira. Perfectly clear. The Divine One wishes secrecy. I will maintain it absolutely."
They continued walking.
Ealdred's training area was in a separate section. Larger space. Multiple rooms. Areas for different skill instruction.
He stood in the central hall. Massive oni. Red skin. Black horns. Overwhelming presence.
He looked up as they entered. His expression immediately shifted. Assessment. Recognition. Concern.
"Kira. What. The fuck. Is THIS?"
"New trainee. 22. She's—"
"She's STRONG." Ealdred's voice was flat. Certain. "Stronger than anything you've brought me before. Stronger than most people on this continent. What is she?"
"Archmage. Twelve hundred years old. Recently transformed. She's... eager to learn proper service."
Ealdred stared at 22. Long assessment. Reading everything he could.
22 stood perfectly still. Professional posture. Waiting.
"She's devoted to Void?" Ealdred asked. "Specifically him?"
"Yes. Absolutely. Completely devoted. To Master Void. Only him." Kira emphasized carefully.
"And she wants maid training? Actually wants it? Not forced?"
"I do," 22 spoke. Clear. Firm. "Master Void deserves perfect service. I must learn. Must become worthy. Please—train me. I'll do anything required."
Ealdred's expression suggested he thought she was completely insane.
But also... interested.
"You're powerful. Wise, probably. Experienced certainly. And you want to learn how to serve tea."
"Yes. And everything else. Every skill required for perfect service. I need this. Please."
"Alright." Ealdred's tone was flat. Clinical. "We start from zero. I don't care about your power. I don't care about your history. You're a trainee. You follow instructions. You accept correction. You do what I say. Understood?"
"Yes, Master Ealdred. Completely understood. I obey absolutely."
Kira felt relief washing through her. He accepted her. It's his problem now.
"I'll leave her with you. She's... intense. Very devoted. But capable. She'll work hard."
"They all work hard. Or they quit." Ealdred looked at 22. "Training starts now. Follow me."
22 followed. Eager. Focused. Ready.
Kira watched them go. Then turned. Left. Escaped.
Finally. One problem handled. Now I can focus on actual work.
Hours passed. Kira managed operations. Reviewed finances. Coordinated with construction teams. Normal duties.
Then—through the bond network—a report came. One of the maids. Training observer.
?Lady Kira. Update on 22. She's been whipped. Many times. Over a hundred strikes.?
Kira's attention sharpened. ?What happened??
?Disagreement with Master Ealdred. About proper tea service technique. She insisted her method was more efficient. He disagreed. She wouldn't back down. He used the whip. Repeatedly. No effect. She just kept arguing.?
?Is she still arguing??
A pause. Then another voice. Null's flat tone entering the network.
?Ealdred knows maid way. Follow.?
Then another voice. One of the older trained maids. Warning tone.
?Last one who challenged Ealdred got her seed pulled out same day. Useless.?
Silence across the network. Heavy. Absolute.
Then the observer again.
?22 stopped arguing. Immediately. She's following Master Ealdred's instructions now. Perfectly. No more resistance.?
Kira felt something between amusement and relief.
Let the monsters sort it out. Even crazy ones have self-preservation instincts.
Null says obey, someone mentions execution, problem solved immediately.
She returned to her work. One less crisis to manage.
Maybe this will actually work out.
