Chapter 13: Playing with Fire

Lee, noticing the flame on his hands, laughs; then he lets go of his wrist and transfers the flame from one hand to the other.

On the monitor, Bexy notices Lee’s adrenaline and heart rate spike; Doctor Jaborian, noticing this too, and tries not to panic. So as not to panic anyone else, he asks in a soft voice, “Lee, are you feeling alright?”

As Lee is distracted playing with the digital flame, and not expecting to hear his name being called, he jumps startled, and the flame disappears. He then looks at the glass wall, only to see the shock on every one of the adults faces. “Yes, I am okay; it was fun!” he says, laughing.

The doctor looks at the monitors and is relieved that Lee’s heart rate has dropped. “How did you feel when you had the fire in your hands?” the doctor asks.

Sakura, hearing that Lee had fire on his hands, turns around. “Big brother burned hands?” she asks concerned, and looks at Lee’s hands, searching for any injury.

“No, Saki, it was fake fire; big brother is okay!” he says, showing her his hands; then he looks at the medical staff. “It was strange. First, I panicked; I know it is fake fire, I made the fire, but my brain thinks, 'Danger!' And I felt heat from the fire, but not in the end.”

“So in a way, even though he knew it was fake, his brain associated the fire with the danger and mimicked the heat?” Nurse Fionna asks, looking at the doctor and Bexy.

The doctor nods. “It seems so! I called him because I noticed that his heart rate and adrenaline had risen.” he says, then looks at Lee. “Can you do it again?”

Lee nods, then looks at his sister and says, “Saki, look! Magic!” With this, he makes a fist with the back of his hand downwards, then opens his fist and extends his fingers into a claw-like shape, and the fireball appears straight away on his palm.

Sakura jumps back at the instantaneous flame burst. “Fire! Fire! Help! Big brother hand on fire!” she bursts out screaming and is almost in tears.

Lee laughs and, in doing so, makes Sakura stop screaming, though tears are at the corner of her eyes. “It is okay, Saki, see?” Lee moves his free hand through the flames; he even lets it stay a little bit before removing it and showing it to Sakura. “No problem on big brother’s hand.”

Sakura grabs his hand, then, looking it over and not seeing any injury, looks at the flame. Lee moves the flame closer to her; she lifts a hand to touch it but then takes it away, almost like she got burned. “Big brother have super powers? Fire hot!”

Their parents, noticing this, look at Doctor Jaborian, only to see him intently examining the monitors with the Lee and Sakura’s brain displays; he seems to be explaining something to Nurse Fionna and Nurse Raxen.

As the doctor turns around, he notices the Watsons looking at him, so he says, “Your daughter sees fire, and because it is so realistic, her brain gives out an alert of danger. On the other hand, that no longer happens to Lee, as he has overtaken that barrier; he knows it’s fake and it can’t harm him.” Even though he explains, he is still in shock that Sakura’s brain managed to mimic the heat of the flame with such perfection that her whole arm reacted on impulse to get away from the flame.

When they look back at Lee, he is sitting on the floor with Sakura.

“Lee, what happened?” Sue asks, and is about to go near them to make sure they are okay. But then she hears the voice of Bexy.

“He is trying to teach her to distinguish that flame of his from a real one,” Bexy says with a monotone voice; his body is so rigid he could pass for a statue or robot.

“So you see, no light!” Lee says. “A real fire has light; this one has no light.” As he explains, he places her hand next to the side of the flame and shows that her hand never changed colour and that no shadow was ever projected.

“But fire hot!” Sakura says, pointing at the flame.

Lee shakes his head. “No, this fire no hot,” he says, speaking in simple tones to make her understand better. “Your head tells you, 'Fire hot, no touch.'” He then, taking advantage of Sakura’s distraction, grabs her hand and places it inside the flame.

At first, Sakura lets out a scream of panic and tries to get away, but then it hits her that she is not in pain, and this time she is the one to run her finger over the flame. “Now, fire no hot,” she says and smiles.

As this continues, a thump is heard; when everyone looks at the source of the sound, they find Bexy sitting on the ground, unable to take any more of the shock of seeing two human children playing with fire—even though it is digital—and going against every fibre in their bodies that is screaming danger. Bexy just loses the strength in his legs and falls down, eyes fixated on the children.

The children look at the other side of the wall and see that Bexy is sitting on the ground and everyone is heading towards him; then they look back at one another.

“Big brother, can you make more magic with fire?” Sakura asks.

“Yes, I think so.” Lee concentrates a bit more and the fire starts to change aspect; its quality starts to downgrade and become more cartoonish, then back to realistic. At this, Sakura starts to clap her hands. Lee then looks at Sakura and asks, “Saki, what is your favourite colour?” Sakura points at her purple shirt. Then Lee covers the flame and asks, “What colour is fire?”

This question makes everyone confused. Sakura, not getting why her brother asked, says, “Fire is red and orange.”

Lee shakes his head. “I don’t think so, look!” As he shows her the fire again, it is burning in a violet and purple colour.

“Wow, beautiful,” Sakura says, kneeling down and approaching closer to the fire in Lee’s hands. “How do I make fire?” she finally says as she mimics Lee’s gesture of opening his fist, but nothing happens.

“Imagine your hand is like Dad’s lighter, the one he uses to start fire outside,” Lee says, but this only makes Sakura more confused.

“How? My hand no has button!” she says, and the image of the lighter starts to float between them, and the button that is pressed to make the spark gets highlighted.

“So we make one!” Lee says, and the image of the lighter vanishes; everyone starts to pay attention to what is about to happen. “But we don’t make a button; we make a magic word.”

“Really? What magic word?” Sakura asks, standing up and dusting off her knees.

Lee starts to wonder what can be a good word to use as he taps his chin. Then there is a dinging sound heard coming from everywhere, and Lee’s eyes sparkle. “Pyro! We can use 'pyro'.”

Sakura says the word a few times, almost like testing it. “Okay, we use 'pyro'.” She then looks at her hand and at Lee. “How do we use the magic word?”

Lee smiles. “Easy. You say or think 'pyro' and open your hand. And imagine your hand is like Dad’s lighter.”

As Lee finishes, an moving image of their father’s lighter appears between them; it starts to rotate so the flame's exit is facing upwards, and then the trigger-like button is shown being pressed and the flame appears.

Lee places his closed fist next to the lighter; when it shows the trigger button being pressed again, he utters at the same time as he opens his hand, “Pyro!” and the flame is visible on his hand and the lighter.

Sakura starts to clap her hands and smiles like she has just seen a great magic trick. “Now I do!” Sakura says and does like Lee did before, but she fails, as her syncing of word and hand opening is not perfect.

“Try this.” Lee says then makes a fist, extends his middle and index fingers upwards at the same time; as he says the magic word, a smaller flame appears on top of his fingers. Sakura nods, and this time she manages to make the flame.

“Lee?” Lee looks around and finds the nurse that got him from the room standing not too far from them. When their eyes meet, she asks, “Where did you hear that magic word?”

Lee smiles and is about to answer, but his words never come out; his eyebrows furrow as he starts to think. “I don’t know. Is it a naughty word?”

The nurse's head tilts sideways as the corner of her lips turns upward in a confused smile. “You don’t know what the meaning is?”

Lee shakes his head. “No! I tried to think of a magic word to start a fire and the word appeared in my head.” He then starts to think of the meaning of the word as the words leave his mouth. “What is the meaning of pyro?”

Another ding is heard and the little robot from the start of the exam starts to spin. Then, when it stops, in a robotic voice it says, “Pyro, a word from Terraqueous in their English language; it originated from their Greek language word that sounds like 'pyr', and the meaning is fire!” Everyone is wide-eyed looking at the robot; then, before anyone can question where the information came from, the robot continues. “This information has been gathered from the website Galactopedia. If you have more curiosities or need more explanations, just ask.”
