Chapter 34. The two teachers

The group that left for the shooting range entered the Gym, but the teenagers were talking by themselves and almost didn’t realize about the extra people in the room. Gabriela ignored the girls and approached Emilio who was training with Rafael.

“Well, I see you are finally learning how to use your weapon, maybe you will soon be able to use it without helping your opponent,” She joked, looking at Emilio. “I guess you are Rafael, it’s nice to meet you. I am Gabriela, the one who was making Emilio a punching bag, also known as teaching him self defense.”

“Nice to meet you too Gabriela,” He said, but his expression didn’t show what he said. He was completely serious and didn’t seem to really like the other teacher. “Now, why did you let him wield the daggers like that? He was a danger to everyone and I refuse to believe that, at the very least, you don’t know how to make him stand stable.”

When Emilio heard his new teacher he gulped. It was good to have two teachers that could train him, but at the rate this was going it was obvious that Rafael didn’t accept his coworker and Emilio understood why. After his first lesson he realized just how messed up his previous training was and Rafael was right in saying that Gabriela should have known he was doing everything wrong.

“First of all, he wasn’t wielding them near anyone but himself and he was not a danger with his healing Skills. Also, I didn’t want to interfere with your teachings. As he was having a specific teacher for the weapon, I thought it was best if I didn’t say anything. Also, it was kind of funny watching him try to use them like that, at least with the replicas.” Gabriela admitted.

After hearing what she said, Emilio stared at Gabriela completely astonished and feeling betrayed. The rest of the arguments were somewhat reasonable, but the last one was just making a joke out of him.

“So you knew I was doing everything wrong?” Emilio asked.

“Of course, I teach self defense! I don’t know how to use Daggers, but combat knives are not that different,” Gabriela explained.

Emilio turned to Rafael, who had been defending him, for help. But he was disappointed by his reaction.

“I like your line of thought. But now that I am here and there is no extra teacher coming we will not do things like these anymore. I want him to be able to stand by himself if he is really the frontline against an alien invasion. Whatever is wrong we will correct it,” Rafael declared.

“I agree. For the record, I didn’t correct him, but I also didn’t let him train like that. I did tell him to use the replicas in a combat against me, but those reflexes are also positive. I am not joking around with his training,” Gabriela added.

Emilio felt even more betrayed when Rafael decided to let everything go. Even if it was something good that they were getting along, Emilio was starting to feel that having two teachers had its toll, and he was going to have to pay the price.

“Great, do we agree that the first thing he needs is technique?” Rafael asked.

“Yes, it is the most important thing right now. How do we split the time?” Gabriela also focused on the training of his students.

“For the moment, he needs to train at least two hours per day with each hand,” Rafael stated.

“That’s ok. I will use two hours of technique and two for combat. One with weapons and one without.” Gabriela added.

“I agree with that, but don’t be lenient. After all, he can heal and was cutting himself before I arrived.”

  “Agreed.”

Emilio had been silent on the side, hearing them discuss his future days. At least, they were collaborating, but as his teachers kept talking he realized something.

“Wait, so even with you here I still suffer beatings?” he asked.

“Well, just pray you get your painless Skill,” Gabriela grinned.

“What about training my Skills?” Emilio asked.

“You can use them to heal during and after combat, right? After the next Trial we will approach this subject again if you manage to get another Skill.” Gabriela explained.

“Now that we have this sorted. Let’s go back to training. Now it is time for your left hand.” Rafael didn’t wait for him to react as he started to correct his posture once again.

Emilio went back to training and decided to accept his fate while praying for that Skill to appear. For the moment he just had to obey his teacher and learn how to use the dagger in his left hand.

He had to admit that he had asked for this when he said that he wanted to substitute his full time job for training. Milagros had not taken his will as a joke and delivered more than what he expected. Now, he had to put in his own effort. He knew that he was suffering for the moment, but what he was doing was something good for his future.

“Hold on, who is the man over there?” Gabriela asked, pointing at Darío and interrupting the training.

“Ohh, I forgot to introduce you. He is Rafael’s husband, he also decided to join our training in the same way as your family did. Could I bother you to train him too?” Emilio asked, still standing in the posture that Rafael had asked him to do.

Gabriela’s face froze when she heard Emilio, but it rapidly changed to a fake smile. She looked at Rafael and at Darío a few times, and then answered ‘Sure, I can teach him,’ before she hurriedly left to talk with her husband.

“What was that about?” Emilio asked, his confusion making him stand normally once again.

“I know that face. Apparently not everyone here is as accepting as you,” Rafael shook his head “At least she kept her opinions to herself.”

“What? For real? I did not expect that,” Emilio commented. “If she makes it hard for you or Darío, please tell me. I liked her so far, but I will not let her exclude you.”

“Thank you,” Rafael smiled, but he still reevaluated his current situation. “Maybe I should skip the meals with you after all.”

“Nonsense. If either you or Darío don’t want to come with us for real, then it is ok. But, if you are skipping them for something like this I won’t allow it.” Emilio declared.

“Well, I thank you again then,” Rafael nodded and he focused on how he had stopped training “Now, back to training. Pick up the left dagger. I will introduce myself to the girls on my own.”

The rest of the afternoon was spent in training. First, Emilio trained with the dagger on his left hand. Then combat with daggers against Gabriela and lastly some hand to hand technique.

As for the drama with the couple, apparently the only one with a real problem was Gabriela. Amelia was indifferent and Victoria was highly curious, but not disrespectful. So, maybe the group might actually work. Or maybe, actually meeting the couple would make Gabriela change her mind.

At the end of the day, they decided to eat dinner together at another restaurant, courtesy of Milagros. In the seating arrangement, Gabriela took her distance from the couple, but Victoria wanted to sit next to them. She also sat next to Amelia resulting in a nice experience where Gabrila was at one end of the table and without any altercations.

Well there was one problem: there were actually leftovers. It seemed that Rafael didn’t need more food than a normal person at all. Apparently, the food intake depended on the Stat, which was actually good as Emilio was really worrying about what his food he was going to need in a month or two.

After dinner, the group decided to meet up in the morning in Emilio’s house to plan what they were going to do. After all, the next day was Thursday and that meant they had a new Trial to take.
