As I stood watching with a smile, Elder Molric’s latest experiment, number 210, began to write a rune onto its own leaves. My own vine tightened around my neck, and I knew that it was uneasy about this new development.
The plant's rune was far more complicated than I had expected for something that had only recently achieved sentience - a group of superimposed flame patterns forming a complete circle, and smaller fire symbols moving towards the center of each pattern. The entire collection of flame patterns emitted a pulsating, fiery red glow that caused me to involuntarily take a step back.
"Elegant!" Elder Molric exclaimed, bending down to get a closer view. "The symmetry is nearly flawless! Look at how it wove in those thermal regulation symbols!"
The plant responded by activating its new rune to send a huge blast of flame directly at Elder Molric's face.
My vine quickly wrapped itself around me to protect me, however I wasn't that concerned. If anything, I had learned that cultivators didn’t survive to become elders because they were reckless.
Sure enough, the flames simply dissipated as they hit Elder Molric, as if they were running into an invisible barrier. He chuckled, and looked pleased. "Excellent power generation! Although we will need to work on your aim."
The plant took this criticism to heart. Its leaves began to glow once again, and it began to create a more complex rune.
"Not so fast," Elder Molric cautioned, shaking his finger. He calmly etched several runes into the air with his finger, leaving behind trails of crimson light.
After a moment, the runes expanded and solidified into a crystalline cage that encircled the angry plant. A second, smaller formation developed around the top of the plant's head, essentially silencing it.
I raised an eyebrow. The casual demonstration indicated that Elder Molric possessed Manifestation Realm abilities, thus placing him at least Rank 6. Which went a long way in explaining his nonchalant attitude towards deadly experimentation.
The vine around my neck tightened its grip slightly, clearly unhappy with the behavior of the other plant. I patted the vine. "Not all plants are as well behaved as you are."
"Where were we?" Elder Molric returned to me, entirely dismissing the muffled anger emanating from the cage. "Ah, yes - elemental runes!"
He walked over to his worktable, clearing off several of the disturbing experiments that were emitting an ominous glow. "Your method of controlling plants with energy manipulation is actually rather impressive. Many wood element users would give anything to have such natural control over plants."
"But?" I asked, knowing that there was likely more.
"But," Elder Molric nodded, "there are drawbacks to relying solely on energy manipulation. Those precious milliseconds that you spend telling the plant what you want it to do - that lag time could be deadly in battle." He gestured at my vine. "And I've also noticed that your vine requires significantly more energy to operate than a properly drawn rune."
I nodded. He was correct - while I had excellent control, it required continuous energy input and was time-consuming. "So, what is the solution?"
"Well, there are two ways for a Rank 1 Skybound to achieve Rank 2 status," Elder Molric stated, retrieving several dusty books. "The most common method is to successfully add an elemental rune to their body."
"But what about people like me?" I asked. "My fundamental rune is already a wood-based design."
Elder Molric shook his head. "A common misunderstanding. Your fundamental rune is primarily designed to collect and refine the red sun's energy into something useable. Yes, its design can enhance your affinity for specific elements; however, that is secondary."
He retrieved a piece of chalk and began drawing diagrams on a nearby slate. "Elemental runes provide an entirely different function - they transform the refined energy into elemental power. Given your skill level, I think you should stick with wood runes. Any other element may cause instability within your Foundational Rune's energy flow."
"And the second method?" I asked, honestly curious.
"Ah!" Elder Molric's eyes lit up. "The second route is to develop such mastery over manipulating the red sun's energy that you can draw runes in mid-air like I just did." He gestured at the cage containing the angry plant, which was still attempting to ignite everything around it through its muzzle. "Of course, few practitioners attempt this until later ranks - there is only so much skin available for runes, after all. However," he shot me a pointed look, "at your level, you will need to develop significantly more control over your energy before you can attempt this."

He wandered over to a cluttered bookshelf and began searching through scrolls, mumbling to himself. "Now where did I... Ah, here it is!" He produced a relatively old scroll.
"This," Elder Molric smiled, holding it as if it was sacred, "is a method to improve your control over your energy. It is one of the few methods the Academy actually got right for teaching students how to manipulate their energy."
He partially rolled out the scroll, showing me columns of calligraphied writing.
"Meditation based," Azure observed as we caught a glimpse of the introductory steps.
I nodded slightly. While the specifics varied across magical systems, some concepts were universal - regardless of whether you were developing your qi or manipulating sun energy, it all started with meditation.
"The exercises become increasingly difficult," Elder Molric stated, rolling the scroll back up and handing it to me. "Work through them at your leisure. If you have questions, my door is always open." He paused for a moment, then glanced at his fire-breathing plant. "Well, usually open…".
I tucked the scroll away carefully as he moved on to the main subject. "Now, the elemental rune you'll learn is called the Worldroot Conduit." He pulled out another scroll, which contained a multitude of detailed diagrams of said rune.
The design was beautiful in its complexity - a series of interconnected roots that formed an infinite knot, with smaller branching patterns occupying the areas between the major lines. Every curve flowed smoothly into the next curve, giving the impression of constant motion, even though the design was stationary.
"You'll need to attach this to your Fundamental Rune," Elder Molric explained. "How you combine them will depend on how you want to manage your energy flow - every student's energy flow is unique."
His eyes sparkled with excitement. "Once you master combining your Fundamental Rune with the Worldroot Conduit, we can start looking at the actual combat runes!"
With that, he walked back to his caged experiment and began babbling soothingly at the angry plant, apparently unconcerned about its continued efforts to incinerate him.
I found a quiet area to examine the diagrams more closely. "Any thoughts, Azure?"
"The design is very intriguing," he replied. "Notice how the root patterns mirror the natural growth formulas used to create your Fundamental Rune? I think we can easily integrate them."
I trailed my fingers along the patterns, tracing the flow of energy that they would produce. "The question is how to integrate it. We need to maintain the balance that exists between the Fundamental Rune and the added pathways."
"We could use the branches on the right-hand side of your Fundamental Rune as anchors and expand them to include the Worldroot pattern," Azure suggested. "This would allow us to keep the same spiral harmony while adding the additional functions."
I nodded thoughtfully, seeing a possible combination. "That would maintain the spiral harmony while allowing the new functions to exist. However, we will need to alter the leaf motifs to account for the additional energy flow."
"Maybe we could modify them to match the secondary root patterns?" Azure pondered. "This would create a natural transition between the two designs."
The vine around my neck flexed slightly, and I realised that it was able to follow our discussion. It extended a tendril and trailed it along the scroll, making an additional suggestion to the conversation.
"Interesting," Azure noted. "The vine seems to be suggesting an alternate attachment point near the bottom of the spiral."
I studied the location it was indicating. "That could actually work better. It would reduce the strain on the existing branches and create a more efficient energy flow." I glanced at the vine. "When did you develop expertise in runic theory, buddy?"
The vine simply curled back to its original position, and I sensed a smugness emanating from it.
"I believe Elder Molric's experimental modifications allowed the vine to develop some previously unexpected insight," Azure offered.
I was about to respond when a large explosion occurred from the direction of Elder Molric's lab, followed by the unmistakable sound of something burning.
"Wonderful progress!" Elder Molric's voice called out through the smoke. "Although perhaps a little too much enthusiasm with the flame production…."
I turned back to the scroll and decided some things were best left unexplored. "Let's focus on mapping out the integration points before anything else catches on fire."
"A wise decision, Master," Azure agreed. "Now, if we adjust the angle of these secondary roots by approximately 15 degrees…."
We spent the next hour developing the details of the plan, occasionally interrupted by the sounds of chaos erupting from Elder Molric's experiment. The vine made several more surprisingly effective suggestions throughout the process; though, I suspected it just liked being part of the planning process.
At last, I had a clear vision of how to merge the two designs together. The Worldroot Conduit would emerge from the base of my Fundamental Rune's spiral, merging the Worldroot patterns with the existing design and producing new pathways for converting elemental energy.
"I believe we are prepared to begin inscribing," Azure said. "However, maybe we should move to the opposite side of the laboratory first."
I glanced in Elder Molric's direction. He was now engaging in a serious philosophical debate with his fire-breathing plant regarding the optimal application of combustion techniques. Even from where we stood, I could feel the heat generated by their "debate."
"Good idea."
We proceeded to the other side of the massive laboratory, where multiple unused workbenches sat beneath a row of windows. The separation and numerous shelves of equipment between us and Elder Molric's experiment provided a reasonable barrier against any stray fireballs.
The vine around my neck gave a final approval-squeeze as I gathered the supplies. Obviously, the vine had already learned an important lesson in regards to survival in this laboratory - keeping a safe distance from Elder Molric's more aggressive experiments was just good sense.
"Now, let's see how many times this one goes wrong before we finally get something we can work with," I murmured, selecting a resonance stylus.
