Chapter 37: Sensor

  (December, year 53 AK)

After Shisui left, Yuta read through the scroll. It wasn’t much, and he was done with it in a few minutes and put it back away as he analyzed the contents.

‘The genjutsu that was described on the scroll was quite interesting as well. The user was casting a genjutsu through the sound of his wooden shoes clanking on each step whenever he moved, even when he steps on a soft grass, and through that sound he was able to cast a genjutsu to whoever hears the sound, that make his targets to misjudge his exact location and attack empty air instead of him.’

‘Too bad he encountered an Uchiha who was able to see through the genjutsu...’

  ...

‘Still, the concept of the genjutsu is close to what I do with my original Shadow Cloak genjutsu, and I could take some inspiration from these records. But still, the main point here is the way the user directed his chakra to his feet and infused it into the sound waves, sometimes even creating those sounds himself, in cases when he steps on the soft grass.’

‘The Uchiha observed the process and described in the scroll how the genjutsu user molded his chakra for a genjutsu, and then transmitted it through the sound waves onto his targets. It wasn’t described in detail, still now I have some good ideas of where to start.’

‘Those wooden shoes he used, it could hardly be considered a ninja tool. And I don’t see any reason why I can’t try to infuse my chakra into the sound waves directly, without any special sound-producing tool, just clapping my hands should suffice, especially since I’m used to releasing my chakra through my hands for other jutsu.’

‘At first, I should learn how to infuse chakra into the sound waves, then how to direct and control the sound waves and how to transmit my chakra through the sound. It would take much more than just that to actually cast a genjutsu, but these steps are fundamental, if I could do that, then I would be able to do the rest as well eventually.’

Yuta started his attempts to figure out how to infuse his chakra into the sound waves during his training. He had no problems releasing his chakra from his hands, but to infuse it into the sound was a completely different thing altogether, his chakra just dispersed into the air whenever he was clapping his hands and trying to get his chakra to attach itself to the sound.

‘How am I even supposed to do this...’ Yuta thought while being a little upset about it. Still, since he didn’t waste too much chakra with his efforts, he continued trying.

After a few hours of efforts, he wasted most of his chakra and felt exhausted, so he went back home to rest.

For the next week Shisui didn’t visit him during his training and Yuta was trying his best to figure out how to infuse his chakra into the sound waves. He was so fixated on it that he wasn’t paying any attention to anything around him, constantly trying to figure this out. Even during classes, he was quietly tapping on his desk with his finger, trying to infuse chakra into the sound.

Hideto Yamanaka, the guy who sits at the same desk as Yuta during classes, was sneaking concern glances at Yuta from time to time, but Yuta didn’t notice and continued his attempts to fuse his chakra into the sound waves with unwavering concentration.

By the end of the week, he was starting to vaguely feel the traces of his chakra that were dispersed into the air during his attempts, as he was always trying to concentrate on his chakra to not overlook the moment he would succeed.

At first Yuta was ignoring the vague feeling of him sensing his chakra in the air, as it was weak and almost imperceptible, but later on as the feeling was growing and becoming more noticeable, at some point he noticed it and he was startled at first, as he didn’t expect to sense his own chakra outside his body suddenly.

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

The only time he was sensing any chakra outside of his body so far, was when he casts a genjutsu on Shisui, but that was different, as that was a connection formed by his jutsu, and it was a controlled result of his jutsu’s inner workings rather than his own chakra that he could freely sense and control.

After making this discovery, Yuta tried to control his chakra that was dispersed in the air, and although it was very hard to sense and even harder to control, as hard as it was all the way back when he only learned to sense his own chakra, yet, with a lot of effort, Yuta managed to make it move according to his will, same as he was moving the chakra that is inside of his body.

As Yuta was wandering about what this discovery meant for him, the chakra in the air quickly dispersed and vanished.

‘Does this mean that my chakra sensitivity and control grew so much that now I’m able to sense the miniscule amounts of chakra that are dispersed in the air? The chakra theory I learned so far implies it. Would I be able to sense chakra that doesn’t belong to me? That would be great!’ Yuta thought excitedly.

‘Wait a second, is this how sensor-type shinobi do these things? Do they just sense the chakra around them like that?’

“How is your training going on?” Shisui casually asked as he suddenly appeared beside Yuta.

Yuta was a little startled by Shisui’s sudden appearance after him being absent for a whole week. He tried to recall what he sensed the moment Shisui appeared, but he quickly realized that he didn’t sense anything abnormal at that moment, still being unable to notice Shisui before he revealed himself.

As Shisui was standing just a few meters away from him, Yuta concentrated the same way he was concentrating on his chakra in the air, and he sensed some vague feeling from Shisui’s position, but it was so weak that Yuta wasn’t sure if it was just his imagination or if he really felt Shisui’s chakra from a distance.

“Are you feeling well? Why are you staring at me?” Shisui asked being a little confused.

“Huh, oh, I’m alright. Although I haven’t figured out the sound thing yet, but I think I’m starting to feel my own chakra when it dispersed in the air. Is that how sensor-type shinobi do their job?” Yuta asked curiously.

“Something like that, yes.” Shisui casually replied, “Did you sensed my chakra as well?”

“I think so, but the feeling is too vague to say for sure, and I still didn’t notice you before you appeared.”

“If you can sense someone else’s chakra from a distance, that means that you are a sensor-type.” Shisui calmly explained, “Most ninjas could train to sense chakra, but that training could take years and their ability to sense chakra will be limited compared to the natural sensor-type ninjas, which could learn to sense chakra from a distance naturally. And those ninjas who aren’t sensor-type usually prefer to use some kind of sensory jutsu instead of using their limited chakra-senses.”

“This is great! But how exactly do the sensors train their skills? With this skill no one will be able to sneak up on me!” Yuta blurted out excitedly.

“Ha ha, I didn’t know you were so bothered by me, I could announce my presence early if you want.” Shisui laughed and said jokingly, “As for sensors, just use your chakra-senses more often and push it to the limits, it’s a natural skill, it didn’t require any special training technique if you are a sensor-type.”

“I see. And what about the Uchiha clan, did you make a decision how to handle it yet?” Yuta asked.

“There is still some time, I’ll try something else first, before I’ll have to resort to more drastic measures.”

After some small talk Shisui left and Yuta resumed his training.

Yuta was genuinely excited about finding out that he apparently a sensor-type, as this opens up a lot of possibilities for him.

‘With chakra sensing skills I would be able to spot my enemies way before they would be able to notice me, and if I learn... or rather when I learn how to use sound, I would be able to cast genjutsu over a much greater distance than any regular genjutsu allows.’

‘Sigh, this progress feels so slow, and there is so much to do until I would be able to call myself a proper genjutsu-specialist. And even then, it would only amount to being on the level of Kurenai at best, and from there starts a hard part of improving my genjutsu to the level when I’ll be able to confidently use it against elite Jonin opponents and higher.’

‘Damn, I’m not even sure if it is possible to use genjutsu against Kage-level shinobi effectively. I remember Itachi was able to do it against Orochimaru, but he had the Mangekyo Sharingan, and there are not much else examples in my memory of genjutsu being successfully used against tough opponents like that.’

‘Well, if it is possible to reach such levels at all, then I'm sure I would be able to do it, and even if my genjutsu would turned out in the end to be ineffective against the strongest shinobi – either way, this time I spend on genjutsu training is still not wasted, since there is no such thing as a wasted time in my case...’
