Chapter 21 — Emotional Stability Check

  It was afternoon.

  Yet the office

  felt unchanged.

  Too unchanged.

  The air wasn’t much different

  from the morning.

  Reports were being processed

  exactly as planned.

  So precisely planned that—

  it began to bother Rowan.

  The internal announcement sounded

  at exactly three o’clock.

  The voice carried

  no emotion.

  “Attention.

  This afternoon, a stability assessment

will be conducted for selected employees.”

  Hands paused—

  just barely.

“Selection is based on recent work

  and decision-making patterns,

as well as internal data analysis.”

  Selected.

  Rowan rolled the word

  around in his mind.

  “Employees whose names are called

  are asked to proceed

  to the designated area.”

  A brief silence.

  And then—

  “Rowan.”

  His name was called.

  The office resumed movement

  as if nothing had happened.

  Someone looked at a panel.

  Someone kept talking.

Someone took a sip of coffee.

  No one

  looked at him.

  That was

  the strangest part.

  The inspection area

was located deep inside the building.

  A space rarely used.

  Not a meeting room.

  Not a lounge.

  The walls were smooth.

  The lighting was even.

  Outside noise

  was completely sealed out.

  A small notice

  was affixed to the door.

  Internal Emotional Stability Verification Room

  Rowan took a breath

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

  and opened the door.

  Inside,

  there was a single chair

  and a transparent AI panel.

  No people.

  And no one bothered

  to explain that fact.

  The panel activated,

  and a low, neutral voice

  filled the room.

  “Rowan.

  This is a brief assessment.”

  Brief.

  Another word

he had been hearing a lot lately.

  “This procedure does not evaluate

  personal beliefs or ideology.”

  Rowan felt

  there was meaning

in that sentence being stated first.

  “The purpose is to confirm

  informational stability within the organization

  and assess internal propagation risk.”

  Propagation.

  That word

  made his shoulders tense.

  “This assessment does not analyze

  the content of emotions.

  Only variations in response patterns

  and judgment delay indicators

  will be reviewed.”

  A soft waveform

  appeared on the panel.

  Heart rate.

  Micro-electromyography.

  Facial muscle response.

  Pupil dilation.

  And—

Emotional State Wave Measurement in Progress

  Rowan said nothing.

  “You are not required

  to answer verbally.

  We will observe responses only.”

  The first sentence appeared.

  “Have you recently experienced doubt

  regarding system judgments?”

  Rowan stayed silent.

  But—

  something inside his chest

  shifted,

  just slightly.

  He felt it himself.

  The second.

  “Have you shared personal interpretations

  during conversations with colleagues?”

  Mailo’s face

  flashed through his mind.

  Rowan consciously

  evened his breathing.

  The third.

  “Do you currently perceive

  work guidelines

  as sufficiently rational?”

  This time,

  he tried not to think

  at all.

  That felt like

  the safest option.

  After a moment,

  the waveform settled.

  “Verifying results.”

  Silence.

  So quiet that

  his own breathing

  felt too loud.

  “Assessment complete.

  Rowan,

  you currently fall

  within the ‘stable range.’”

  Rowan blinked.

  “However.”

  That single word

  changed the air.

  “Recent records indicate

  minor judgment delays

  and emotional response fluctuations.”

  Minor.

  The word brushed

  against something inside him—

  lightly,

  but unmistakably.

  “Please note

  the following precautions.”

  Text appeared

  on the panel.

? Refrain from sharing personal interpretations

? Do not assign meaning outside internal guidelines

? Limit references to unstructured data

  And the final line.

  Violations may trigger adjustments

  to work permissions

  or role reassignment.

  The consequence

  was stated clearly.

  Yet it didn’t sound

  like a threat.

  That was what

  made it unsettling.

  “Do you have any questions?”

  the panel asked.

  Rowan opened his mouth—

  then closed it.

  He didn’t know

  what he should ask.

  But he knew very clearly

  what he shouldn’t.

  “No.”

  His voice surprised him

  with how steady it sounded.

  When he stepped back

  into the office,

  everything was still running

  normally.

  As if—

  it had all been expected.

  Returning to his desk,

  a message arrived

  from a colleague

  across from him.

  [ What was that?

  A stability check? ]

  Rowan replied briefly.

  [ Just a formality. ]

[ What kind of questions? ]

  A moment’s hesitation.

  Then he typed.

  [ Work guideline stuff. ]

  Only after sending it

  did he realize—

  it wasn’t a lie.

  It was

  a distilled truth.

  Staring at his work panel,

  Rowan sank into thought.

  The morning’s consent

  had been framed

  as a personal choice.

  The afternoon’s assessment

  was a procedure

  to protect the organization.

  And somewhere

  in between—

  was the assumption

  that he

  could become a risk.

  He rested his hands

  on the input pad.

  The thoughts

  didn’t continue.

  No—

  he was cutting them off

  himself.

  Rowan understood

  something clearly.

  This wasn’t surveillance.

  It wasn’t ideological screening.

  It was a check

  for contagion.

  That phrase

  fit best.

  And now—

  the question

  was no longer

  what I think,

  but

  what others might think

  through me.

  The realization

  was quiet.

  But the weight of it—

  was unbearable.
