Chapter 6 - Beyond the System’s Reach

The mountains were older than the System.

That was the first thought that crossed Kael’s mind as he climbed the broken stone path winding up the western ridge.

Jagged cliffs stretched endlessly toward the sky. Ancient wind carved deep scars into the rock, and narrow trails clung to the mountainside like fragile threads.

The forest behind him had already vanished beneath the morning fog.

  Ahead lay the Outer Wilds.

A place few sanctioned cultivators ever visited willingly.

  Not because it was forbidden.

  But because it was unpredictable.

The System’s influence weakened beyond the mountains, and without its constant regulation, creatures evolved strangely… and power grew in ways the Celestial Order could not easily monitor.

  Which made it dangerous.

  And valuable.

Kael tightened the strap of the pouch at his side.

Inside it, the lotus lamp pulsed faintly.

The warmth had grown stronger over the past few hours.

  Not dramatically.

  But noticeably.

Almost like the relic could sense something waiting ahead.

The higher he climbed, the quieter the world became.

System notifications, which once appeared regularly in civilized territory, had almost stopped entirely.

  Curious, Kael summoned the interface.

  The panel flickered into existence.

  But it was… weaker.

The edges shimmered slightly, as if the connection itself had become unstable.

  [SYSTEM INTERFACE]

  Name: Kael Ashbound

  Level: 1

  Strength: 12

  Agility: 12

  Endurance: 11

  Deviation Index (DI): 12%

  System Stability: 78%

  Monitoring Status: Remote

  Kael raised an eyebrow.

  “Seventy-eight percent.”

He hadn’t even crossed the mountain ridge yet.

So the Observer had been telling the truth.

The System’s reach truly weakened out here.

He dismissed the panel and continued climbing.

The path eventually opened into a narrow plateau overlooking a vast valley beyond.

And the moment Kael stepped onto the ridge—

  He felt it.

A strange pressure in the air.

  Not hostile.

  But heavy.

Like stepping into an ancient place that remembered a different age.

  The wind carried unfamiliar scents.

  Wet stone.

  Wild grass.

  Something faintly metallic.

Below him stretched the Outer Wilds.

A massive valley filled with thick forests, broken ruins, and scattered lakes that reflected the cloudy sky like shattered mirrors.

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

  No cities.

  No towers.

  No cultivation academies.

  Just wilderness.

  And somewhere within it—

  Power.

The lotus lamp grew warmer in his hand.

Kael pulled it from the pouch.

  Golden petals flickered softly.

  Then a panel appeared.

  [LOTUS LAMP – INTERNAL RESONANCE]

  Synchronization: 6%

  Environmental Response: Favorable

  Flame Stability: Increasing

  Kael stared at the message.

  “Favorable?”

  The relic hummed faintly.

  The golden glow brightened slightly.

  He exhaled slowly.

  “So you like it here.”

  He couldn’t blame it.

  The air itself felt freer.

  Less rigid.

  Less… controlled.

  Kael took another step forward.

  Then the ground trembled.

  Just slightly.

At first he thought it was a distant rockslide.

  But the vibration continued.

  Rhythmic.

  Heavy.

Something was moving in the valley below.

Kael crouched near the ridge and scanned the forest.

The movement came from a clearing about a hundred meters away.

  Trees snapped.

  Birds exploded into the sky.

Then something massive stepped out of the undergrowth.

  Kael’s breath caught.

  The creature resembled a wolf.

  But only vaguely.

Its body stood nearly twice the height of a horse. Dark fur covered thick muscles, and jagged bone spikes grew along its spine like twisted blades.

Its eyes burned a dull crimson.

The moment it stepped into the open, a faint System panel flickered above it.

  Feral Beast – Thornback Direwolf

  Threat Rating: Level 6

  System Control: Partial

  Kael grimaced.

  “Level six.”

That was stronger than the System Agent he fought earlier.

But something about the panel looked strange.

  System Control: Partial.

Meaning the creature wasn’t fully regulated.

  Which meant—

It would be far more dangerous.

The Direwolf lowered its massive head and sniffed the air.

Its crimson eyes suddenly locked onto Kael.

A low growl rumbled through the valley.

  “Well,” Kael muttered.

“I guess this is how the Outer Wilds say hello.”

  The wolf lunged.

  Its speed was terrifying.

One second it stood across the clearing.

The next it was already halfway up the ridge.

  Kael’s mind raced.

  Direct combat would be suicide.

But he had something new now.

  The lotus lamp pulsed.

  A familiar panel appeared.

  Ability Available

  Ember Step

  Cost: Low Flame Output

  Effect: Short Burst Movement

  Kael inhaled sharply.

  “Let’s try it.”

  The wolf leaped.

  Massive claws slashed downward—

  And Kael moved.

Golden light flashed beneath his feet.

For a split second the world blurred.

Then he was five meters to the side.

The Direwolf crashed into the stone where he had stood.

  Rock shattered under the impact.

  Kael’s heart pounded.

  “That’s fast.”

  But the creature recovered instantly.

Its crimson eyes burned with hunger.

  Then it charged again.

Kael triggered Ember Step a second time.

Golden flame flickered across the ground.

His body shot forward like a spark carried by wind.

He slid beneath the creature’s swinging claws and rolled to his feet.

  The lotus lamp burned brighter.

  Heat spread through his arm.

  A new panel appeared.

  [LOTUS LAMP – INTERNAL RESONANCE]

  Synchronization: 7%

  Flame Response: Combat Engagement

  The Direwolf roared.

Its jaws snapped shut inches from Kael’s shoulder.

He barely avoided the bite with another Ember Step.

  But each movement drained him.

  This wasn’t sustainable.

  The creature was too large.

  Too strong.

Kael’s gaze flicked across the terrain.

  Then he saw it.

The broken stone ruins scattered across the clearing.

  Collapsed pillars.

  Ancient walls.

If he could maneuver the wolf between them—

  He might have a chance.

  The Direwolf lunged again.

  Kael activated Ember Step.

Golden flame streaked across the ground as he dashed toward the ruins.

  The wolf followed immediately.

Its massive body smashed through fallen stone like paper.

Kael darted between two crumbling pillars.

The creature barreled straight through them.

  Stone collapsed behind him.

  Dust filled the air.

  Then Kael saw his opportunity.

A jagged column leaned precariously above the clearing.

  Barely balanced.

  He sprinted beneath it.

  The Direwolf charged.

Kael pivoted sharply and slammed his fist into the cracked base of the pillar.

Golden light exploded from the lotus lamp.

  The weakened stone shattered.

  The column collapsed.

Thousands of pounds of rock crashed down onto the Direwolf.

  The ground shook violently.

  Dust clouds swallowed the clearing.

  Kael staggered backward, breathing hard.

  Silence followed.

  For several seconds nothing moved.

  Then a System panel appeared.

  Enemy Defeated

  Strength Increased

  Agility Increased

  Deviation Index Rising

  Kael exhaled slowly.

  Another panel followed.

  [SYSTEM INTERFACE]

  Strength: 12 → 13

  Agility: 12 → 14

  Endurance: 11 → 12

  Deviation Index: 12% → 15%

  Kael blinked.

  “Fifteen already?”

  That was a huge jump.

The moment the number stabilized, the lotus lamp flared brightly.

  Golden petals shimmered.

  [LOTUS LAMP – INTERNAL RESONANCE]

  Synchronization: 8%

  Flame Strength: Growing

  Kael smiled faintly.

“So this is how it works.”

  Danger.

  Deviation.

  Growth.

  The Outer Wilds were perfect.

  But far above the clouds—

  Inside the Celestial Registry—

The data streams erupted in alarm.

  Subject: Kael Ashbound

  Deviation Index: 15%

  Growth Acceleration: Confirmed

A new message appeared in the Observer channel.

  Recommendation

  Deploy Tracking Protocol

The Observer watched silently for several seconds.

  Then issued a command.

  Authorization Granted

  Deploy: Hunter Unit

Back in the valley, Kael stood beside the fallen Direwolf, unaware of the decision being made above him.

He looked toward the deeper forests of the Outer Wilds.

  The journey had only begun.

And already the System’s control was weakening.

  Kael lifted the lotus lamp.

Golden light flickered across the ruins.

  “Alright,” he said quietly.

“Let’s see how far deviation can go.”

In the sky above the mountains—

  Something began descending.

  Not a System Agent.

  Something older.

  Faster.

  Designed for one purpose.

  To hunt anomalies.
