Chapter 9 The Dark Magic of Professor Elbert Rev. 1 (12/6/2025)

Candles flickered ominously as shadows danced around the room. “Professor, do you really believe Rinoa understands the danger?” Lenz’s voice trembled, anxiety veiling his features.

Elbert leaned forward, his gaze piercing. “Do any of us truly grasp what we’re dabbling in? This isn’t mere magic, Lenz. This is perilous sorcery. It could awaken things best left undisturbed.”

“But... the council thinks she has potential,” Lenz protested. “Shouldn't that count for something?”

“Potential can be a double-edged sword,” Elbert replied, swirling his wine with a contemplative frown. “Her ambition could lead us all into darkness.”

Lenz gulped, “And if she succeeds, how do we control what’s unleashed? Can anyone control it?”

“That’s the question,” Elbert remarked dryly, a hint of darkness creeping into his voice. “What happens when we unleash forces beyond our comprehension?”

“I—I don’t like this,” Lenz admitted, his hands fidgeting. “What if we’re wrong?”

“Wrong? Or perhaps it’s just the beginning,” Elbert mused, a shadow of a smile playing across his lips. “Imagine the power at stake, Lenz. Will you stand by while our fate hangs in the balance?”

Lenz swallowed hard. “It feels like we're gambling with lives we don’t even know.”

“Precisely. Every choice is a roll of dice in this game,” Elbert replied. “What price will we pay for knowledge?”

“A high one, I fear,” Lenz said quietly, uncertainty thick in the air.

Elbert waved dismissively. “Aficionado, Lenz, not a craftsman. But then, every bottle tells a tale, doesn’t it? We chase after mysteries, both in blends and spells." His voice dropped, shadows flickering in his gaze. "If Rinoa's project earns the council's blessing, we're inviting legends back. Who knows what might emerge?”

Lenz, caught in his own excitement, placed the bottle down with a thud. “But Rosetta wine, Professor? It grows where the mists hide. Dangerous, yes, but—imagine the taste! The Smiths guard their secrets like a dragon its hoard. The ice dragon bottle is a key. Did you realize that a dash of snow flower preserves—”

“Enough, Lenz!” Elbert interrupted, his distraction palpable. “You should pen a tome, I’m sure. But listen, it’s the power, not the label. Rare wines can awaken magic lurking in a wizard’s bones. I’ve felt the stirrings—right before I nearly met my end.”

Lenz's posture straightened, mischief dancing in his eyes. “You’ve defied death more times than I can count. The great Elbert—just six like you in history, they say. If this wine enhances your power, perhaps you should hold back?”

Elbert's smirk darkened, his intensity sharpening. “Power… yes. It’s always a gamble, isn’t it? Have you ever felt magic coursing through you, cold as ice and searing? Dark magic, Lenz. What if I showed you?”

The fire dimmed. A chill settled across the study. "What is happening, Elbert?" Lenz's voice trembled as shadows thickened around them.

“You’ll see soon enough,” Elbert replied, his tone low and teasing. "Can you feel it? The darkness creeping in?"

Lenz's breath quickened. "Is this... is this magic? What kind?"

“Magic?” Elbert mused, stepping closer, his voice a whisper threaded with danger. “It’s a hunger, Lenz. Always hungry.”

"Hungry for what?" Lenz’s heart pounded as the shadows curled tighter around him.

“For power, for life,” Elbert said, smirking. “Even the dead can crave.”

"But to bring them back—to tamper with death?" Lenz's voice cracked under the weight of his fear.

“Ah, but isn't that the question?” Elbert chuckled darkly. “What price would you pay for love? What would you sacrifice?”

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

"Isn't there a reason it's forbidden?" Lenz countered, desperation creeping into his tone.

Elbert leaned closer, eyes glinting with madness. “Why should we follow rules that keep us from what we truly want? Rules are for the weak, Lenz.”

"And what about the consequences?" Lenz asked, the shadows squeezing his chest like a vice.

“Consequences? They’re just echoes in the darkness,” Elbert whispered, his grin revealing sharp teeth. “You’ll learn that soon enough.”

Elbert let out a low growl, a hint of irritation in his voice. “Hope? It’s more of a treacherous beast than any curse.”

“Why would anyone... dare to wake what should be resting?” Lenz questioned, a tremor in his tone as shadows flickered at the edge of his vision.

“Because there are those who believe they can control it,” Elbert replied, eyes narrowing. “But control is an illusion.”

Lenz scanned the room, the paintings twisting; shadows danced, mocking him. “The noble lady… why does she seem alive?”

“She’s not alive, Lenz. Just a fragment of rage trapped in colors, a reminder.”

“And the children?” he whispered, dread creeping into his chest as their hands seemed to grasp at him.

“Those are warnings—echoes of ambition turned monstrous. Don’t you see?” Elbert’s voice was firm, slicing through the tension.

Lenz recoiled, wiping the sweat from his brow. “Make it stop—please!”

“Fear is good,” Elbert said, contemplating him. “But understanding? That’s essential. Do you wish to survive?”

“Survive? At what cost?” Lenz’s breath hitched, uncertainty swirling in the air.

“Everything costs, Lenz. Black Mist, it corrupts and animates the unwilling. But beauty disguises the horror.”

“How can you...” Lenz started, words hanging between them like thick fog. “How can you wield something so dark?”

“Easily?” Elbert scoffed, a bitter smile tracing his lips. “I bear scars etched deep. Scars invisible to you. You must learn, not just obey.”

Lenz’s heart raced, his voice barely above a whisper. “Learn what? To summon demons?”

“To know the price of power,” Elbert urged. “Each spell has its shadows, its price—some steep, some devastating.”

“And if I refuse?” Lenz asked, dread pooling in his gut.

“Then you remain prey to the darkness, Lenz. You can either face it or be consumed.”

Lenz’s voice barely broke through the silence. “And yet you… you wield it so easily?”

Elbert's gaze turned distant, a shadow passing over his face. “Easily? You mistake my scars for ease, Lenz. There’s a darkness within that you cannot see.”

Lenz swallowed, doubt creeping in. “Professor, I—I’m not ready for this.”

“Neither was Entrople,” Elbert replied softly, his voice a fragile whisper. “Nor was I. We are all unprepared. But time is merciless, Lenz. It advances without regard for grief.” He placed his palm flat on the table, fingers trembling slightly. “So you wish to know of the forbidden library?”

Lenz nodded hesitantly, fear gnawing at him. “But the directory's sealed on the fiftieth floor. Five hold keys and they never share. I could attempt it... for you.”

“Always so eager, always so brave,” Elbert said, a wistful smile tugging at his lips. “But there’s another path.”

He drew forth an obsidian stone, its surface a cold, dark gleam, pulsating softly with an ominous purple glow. “This—it’s a tool, Lenz. But it demands a price.”

“What do you mean?” Lenz's pulse quickened as Elbert pressed the stone against his chest.

“Forgive me, Lenz,” Elbert murmured, sorrow lacing his tone. “Every spell requires a sacrifice. You sought knowledge, did you not? This is what it costs.”

Lenz felt his vision constrict, the world narrowing to a painful point. “What’s happening to me?” he gasped, panic rising. “Make it stop…”

“Trust in the process,” Elbert urged, though his voice held a tremor of uncertainty. “The darker truths will reveal themselves… but at what cost?”

Elbert looked away, unable to meet his eyes. “The world is cruel, Lenz. The shadows you invoke will never forget a debt owed.”

“But why me?” Lenz’s body jerked, “Why must I bear this burden?”

Elbert’s gaze remained fixed on the floor. “You’re the last spark of hope, or perhaps just my folly.”

As the pain twisted within him, Lenz gasped, “It’s like being torn apart. Can’t you just… end it?”

“End it?” Elbert’s voice trembled. “To end it would mean to erase what we’ve started. We can’t turn back.”

Lenz coughed, the black mist spilling forth. “I didn’t choose this path!”

“None of us do,” Elbert murmured, “But the dark knows who to claim.”

The room felt alive, the paintings’ eyes igniting as if aware of their conversation. “They look like they’re judging me,” Lenz whispered, fear creeping into his voice.

“They have seen what you can become. Your fears feed the darkness,” Elbert warned, “You must confront them.”

“Confront what?” Lenz’s breath hitched, “The monster I feel growing inside?”

“Or the wisdom that awaits,” Elbert pressed, confusion lacing his tone, “What if the truth is worse?”

“What truth?” Lenz's heart raced, “What am I becoming?”

Elbert said nothing, lost in a grim contemplation. “Rest, Lenz. Sometimes, the answers hide in the shadows.”

“And the shadows… what do they want from me?” Lenz pressed, his voice breaking.

“Everything,” Elbert whispered, pulling his cloak tight as the fire flickered ominously. “Or perhaps just your soul.”

“Why do you linger, Lenz?” Elbert asked, glancing back at the huddled figure. “You know the shadows whisper secrets best kept hidden.”

Lenz shifted, his gaze still locked on the painted eyes watching over him. “And what if those secrets hold the ultimate truth?”

“Truth? Or a curse?” Elbert’s voice dropped, thick with tension. “You’ve seen the cost, yet you tread further into darkness.”

“Isn’t that what we seek?” Lenz replied, a hint of desperation threading his words. “Knowledge that transcends our limits?”

“At what price?” Elbert leaned closer, urgency dripping from his tone. “These forces, they consume more than just lives.”

A chill crept into the space, and Lenz heard the faint echo of a curse in the air. “But if I don’t confront it, will I ever be free?”

"Freedom is an illusion born from ignorance," Elbert warned, his voice low. "What you chase will only bind you tighter to the shadows.”

And just then, a creeping mist snaked around their feet, an unsettling omen of the truths yet to unfold.
