PoR Ch. 35

Ravenna watches as Arata coddles his dog, deciding to just give him a moment of peace before commenting.

“I have some things I feel would be important to point out while watching you, it’s about Beelzebub. I can tell you that thing’s ability.” Ravenna takes a seat next to Arata to drill the info into his brain while he cuddles with Poro.

Explain? Guess there are a few questions. What exactly did it do to Clemence? When we fought, the presence reminded me of that first bug I fought. Arata thought about the entities for a little while.

Ravenna continues, “I told you that magic was a part of your soul, it’s the essence of your being, and using it means you’re using up your very soul. However, I should’ve divulged a little further. Something happens once you reach zero.”

Did she forget when she told me? You die, right? No… Clemence didn’t seem dead, yet I wouldn’t call that thing Clemence either.

“As not to lose the very essence of yourself, the soul will pull from another source in a desperate act of self-preservation. The very calamity that plagues the universe, the madness will erode the individual as they gain a new esoteric reinterpratation of their soul.” Ravenna continues further.

Arata now looks a little pissed, “Was the bug I first fought one of those, too?” She was really petty about not telling me stuff back then, too. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if-

Ravenna averts her eyes, choosing not to comment on Arata’s question.

Damn angel, you really aren’t going to address the blatant misinformation you gave me when I first came to this world? Arata sighs, knowing she’s since changed her ways.

Ravenna coughs, clearing her throat, “We call entities like what Clemence became, faded… named after what about them was lost in the individual during the faded’s conception. Now you may be wonderin-”

Arata blurts out, “What does that have to do with Beelzebub?”

“I was just about to get to that jackass! Don’t interrupt me, be grateful I’m telling you these things!” Ravenna begins to pout.

She continues, “Beelzebub’s ability lies in the proboscis; it sucks the mana out of people… normally, this would just drain someone of their vitality as that is also absorbed yet at a much slower rate than mana, but with how magic works in this world, it’s a terrifying ability to fight. That beast can redistribute the energy attained and is naturally very strong and fast and flies-”

The progression of opponents in this world is fucked. Beelzebub can just create more beings like that bug in the prison as its ability. “What the hell is up with the demons in this world? Can’t I counter the thing in some way?!” Arata groans.

Ravenna’s eyes widen at the headache he is giving her, “Well, looking at Beelzebub’s fight I can tell you got one advantage. You don’t have mana, the only way it can attack you is using faded beings it creates and whatever magic it might have on top of the proboscis. Yet the faded beings it creates could also attack it so Beelzebub usually plays passively when it comes to creating one.”

  Arata responds, “And killing Beelzebub?”

Ravenna ponders for a few seconds, “well you’re not quite advanced enough yet I think to use demiurge foundry efficiently but it’s one of the few abilities with the potential to sway perilous odds. If the enemy can create stronger spells, Demiurge’s foundry can create stronger results from reconstructing the spell.”

“But- remember, try not using Demiurge foundry against the minions of Beelzebub, last time it reacted according, staying above you after seeing the first instance of you using the ability.”

“Ravenna, I’ll buy you sweets as my apology, but I’ll need to rely on you soon,” Arata explains before shutting his eyes. He had devised a new plan.

Arata’s other world logbook entry #5: The Faded

Not really used to Ravenna giving up an infodump so readily. She neglected to tell me the main downside of limited magic. Once you run out, you turn into some kinda eldritch abomination. I’ve only encountered two things that I know to be one. The man-eating centipede and Clemence.

Asking Ravenna more led me to find out that in the case I transform, I’ll just be sent back to the theater. That’s a lot better, since I have a failsafe, which means I’ve got nothing to worry about. The process, I can’t imagine how terrifying it is. Clemence seemed horrified by what was happening to her. Her body moved on its own, yet her mind resisted. That’s why she originally had difficulty casting magic, I presume.
