Interlude: “You’re Not Afraid”

  “You’re not afraid of me.

But what if I’m starting to be?”

Aurenya’s voice had barely risen above a whisper.

From behind the door, Rin didn’t hesitate.

“I’m not afraid of you,” she said.

Not a whisper. Not a shout. Just steady truth.

“Not then. Not now. Not ever.”

  The hallway held its breath.

Then, slowly — quietly — the door creaked open.

  And Aurenya stood there.

  Not in her school form.

Not in the shape the world had come to know.

She had shifted — no longer the sixteen-year-old girl the hospital records recognized. This version of her was older. Taller. Her features sharpened with age and truth. Her eyes glowed faintly, a low crimson glimmer softened by pain. Her fangs, though only just visible, were unmistakable.

  She didn’t speak.

Didn’t ask Rin to come in.

She only stood there, as if afraid the truth of her would drive Rin away.

  Rin didn’t flinch.

  She stepped forward. Calmly. Certain.

  Walked into the room.

And gently closed the door behind her.

  Aurenya’s breath caught.

Rin turned to face her fully, her voice low and full of something steady.

“I don’t need you to be anything other than what you are.

  I don’t know everything that’s happening…

But I know I want to stay.

  I want you to stay.”

She stepped forward again — slow, like nearing something sacred, not dangerous.

  “You don’t scare me.

Not your truth. Not your strength. Not your pain.”

  She paused.

Then, with gentle certainty, she reached out and wrapped her arms around Aurenya.

  Aurenya froze.

  The contact… startled her.

No one had ever embraced her in this form.

  Not like this.

  Not tenderly. Not without fear.

“It’s okay,” Rin whispered against her shoulder.

“You’re not alone. You’re not lost. I’ve got you.”

Aurenya let out a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding — a breath that felt like it had been trapped across lifetimes.

Rin stepped back, still holding her hand.

“Lay down,” she said gently. “You’re exhausted. Let yourself rest.”

Aurenya obeyed — half dazed — lowering herself to the bed with a kind of slow disbelief.

  Rin lay down beside her.

  They faced each other.

  Eyes meeting in the dark.

  No masks. No roles.

Just breath and heartbeat and understanding.

  No fear.

  No lies.

Only this moment — strange, quiet, real.

Aurenya’s hand curled loosely in the space between them, unsure if it was allowed to reach.

Rin bridged it — closed the distance, laced their fingers together.

And then, just before sleep could pull them under, Rin leaned in.

Pressed a soft, steady kiss to Aurenya’s lips.

  Warm.

  Assured.

  True.

She didn’t kiss her because she understood everything.

She kissed her because she chose her — even in the not-knowing
