Interlude: "The Look in the Glass"

The sun had slipped low behind the apartment buildings, and the sky was painted in soft gold and cooling lavender. Rin and Aurenya walked home side by side, the silence between them no longer uncomfortable — just full of things neither of them knew how to say.

The sidewalk ahead shimmered faintly with leftover heat. Somewhere across the street, a couple laughed too loudly. A bird darted overhead and vanished.

They passed a quiet storefront — a dusty glass window with a darkened interior and a faded "For Lease" sign curled in the corner.

Rin glanced at the glass as they walked past it, not thinking.

  And stopped.

In the window’s reflection, she saw Aurenya — but not as she was.

The girl beside her in the glass was older. Not dramatically. Just… more. Her face held the same shape, but her posture was poised, regal. Her presence felt heavier — not oppressive, but powerful. Her eyes were deep crimson, like blood lit from within. Fangs peeked subtly between the curve of a calm, closed-mouth smile.

  She was beautiful. Unnervingly so.

And she was looking at Rin with something startlingly gentle. Not amusement. Not hunger.

  Warmth.

  Care.

  Something impossibly real.

  Rin blinked.

The reflection blinked too — but now, it was just Aurenya. Sixteen. Slight. Silent.

  Rin turned her head.

Aurenya was already looking at her.

Not startled. Not guilty. Just watching.

Like she’d known Rin would see.

Their eyes held for a moment longer.

Then Rin turned toward the apartment door, her thoughts a soft storm. As they stepped inside together, one memory circled back to her — quiet, steady, unmistakable:

“Would you be afraid of me… if I was something you couldn’t explain?”

And her own answer, still true:

“No. I’d be afraid of not understanding. But not of you.”

But even now, she wasn’t sure which version of Aurenya she’d meant that for.

  Or if it mattered.
