Chapter 1 Waking up and status

Waking up and statusWhere am I? Groggily I open my eyes. Well, at least I try to, but it feels like someone has pstered tape onto them, or rather straight-up removed them. Panicked, I try to bring my arms to my face, only to panic even more, when I can't feel them too.

Now that I think about it, why is it so quiet? My panic becomes fear, as I notice, that even my ears seem to be missing. I begin to struggle, trying to find something, anything, that still works on my body. Any sensation, that tells me, that I'm not dead, not gonna be in this eternal darkness forever.

To my relief, I feel something brush against my skin. Even tho the other senses seem to be gone, thankfully, my sense of touch survived. This only helps me calm down briefly before I remember that it's the only sense that remains.

In my desperation, I decide to try hearing one more time. Maybe I simply didn't try hard enough. I try to console myself before trying again. I strain my mind trying to get some kind of signal from the outside world. As I try for who knows how long, suddenly something appears in my mind.

[You have gained the skill Sense Surroundings.]

What?! I shout in my mind fbbergasted, but immediately after, I think, Status! And a huge screen appears in my mind.

Instead, it's from excitement. Now one might wonder, why I would suddenly be excited being told that I'm a worm, and the answer is simple. I love Isekai stories. Particurly those about somebody reincarnating into a monster. Like many others, I always projected myself into the position of the protagonist, and there was one thing I always questioned.

Why do they always freak out like that, when they notice that they lost their human body? As if their new body never had the possibility of growing far beyond their former body. And, tho I do understand, that having hands and feet is convenient, their new bodies were convenient in their own way. They were just limiting themselves by their own thinking.

I mean, as if they could thrive that much if they were still in their human bodies. After all, humans are Jack of all trades, master of none. Did they really think, their human bodies would be better, than the bodies of creatures, that evolved in such an environment for so long?

Or did they not want to reincarnate at all? That opinion would be even more illogical. I mean who doesn't want to go on an adventure?

At least that's how I always saw it, but I quickly realized, that not many others shared my opinion.

Anyway, let's look at the status. The first thing I notice is, that I don't have a name. As such, I decide to try something. My name is Glutter. I think and to my surprise, I actually feel something in my body. It is, as if that name gets imprinted deep within me.

  [You acquired a name.]

[As a consequence you have acquired the unique skill, Foody]

That worked better than I expected. I tried this because it was another thing I always wondered about. In these novels, a name often had a big significance for a monster, beyond just being a way to address it. As such I thought, whether the monsters could name themselves. In this world, it seems, it's possible. Not only that, it seems as if the skill I received is connected to my name. After all, I came to the name Glutter from Gluttony.

Whatever. Let's continue. My maximum age seems average for a worm.

You wanna know how I know that? I recently programmed a game, where you control a worm. To make it more realistic, I researched various things about worms. As such, I know a lot about worms. For example, I now have both a hole and a stick, if you know what I mean.

I seem to be a Lesser Stoneworm. Not a species I know about, so let's focus on it. In most novels, that seems to do the trick.

As I focus on the bel, new information gets fed into my head:

  Lesser Stoneworm

A Worm, that feeds on Stones. As it has little to no offensive ability, other than its sharp mouth, it is practically impossible for it to evolve without help. In return, it is capable of evolving into any kind of worm under the right circumstances.

Wow! That seems like a promising start! And the Stats seem very promising as well! Jokes aside, aside from intelligence, which presumably comes from my previous life, and MP, which seems to be based on intelligence, this is absolute shit. Let's look at the stats and see if there are surprises or if the author just wants to fill the chapter.

  Hit Points(HP)

shows how much health the user has

  Mana Points(MP)

shows how much mana the user has

  Stamina Points(SP)

shows how much stamina the user has

  Well, no surprise there.

  Strength(Str)

increases the muscle strength of the user

Hmmm. Wouldn't that also increase the speed?

  Dexterity(Dex)

increases the body control of the user

  Defense(Def)

increases the damage reduction of the user

  That's logical.

  Vitality(Vit)

increases the max HP and immunity of the user

  Intelligence(Int)

increases the max MP and thinking capabilities of the user

  Stamina(Sta)

increases max SP and attention span of the user

What? Wouldn't attention span be attributed to Intelligence? Also, these st three stats all seem to increase another stat. It seems like it sets the other stat to 10 times their value. Also, looking at my intelligence stat, it seems like one can increase their stats through training.

Lastly, let's look at the skills.

  Dig

Allows you to spend stamina to make the area you're digging weaker. Works on every kind of substance.

In other words, this skill would also work on skin? That seems a little too powerful, doesn't it? Also, there seems to be a level too. Maybe its effectiveness would increase, if I raise the level. Raising the level is probably done through using the skill.

  Incredible Understanding

Lowers the conditions for acquiring skills and raises the leveling speed of skills.

What kinda me name is that?

'Ey, what kind of unique skills do you have?'

'Great Sage and Predator, and you?'

  'Incredible Understanding and Foody'

  *A face full of pity*

Dammit! Also, is that why I acquired Sense Surroundings so fast? Because the skills requirements were lowered. What even are requirements? I would guess, that you have to do certain things to get a skill. An example is, when I concentrated on my surroundings I got the Sense Surroundings skill but, well. In the end, it's just a theory. A skill theory.

  Sense Surroundings

Allows the user to sense their surroundings within a spherical radius.

Let's try that one. It doesn't seem to consume anything. Focusing my senses on the outside world I try to feel it and after a short while, I actually sense something.

  Ooooh!

My 'vision' is slightly elongated and I can see in every direction. It's just like every cell of my body is an eye through which I can see the world. Just that I seem to need gsses because my 'vision' can only see a centimeter away from my body. What surprises me, is that I can take everything in without much trouble. Not just that, I don't feel disoriented. Do these skills come with such a function?

But damn, finally I have a mirror! Indeed, this skill allows me to look at myself. Mustering myself, I notice that I seem to have the same proportions as normal earthworms, but comparing myself to the surrounding rocks, I seem to be at least three times bigger. Additionally, my mouth has several sharp spicky teeth, that all point slightly to the front but still inward being on my circur mouth. I feel like closing that mouth in the middle would hurt anyone pretty badly.

My body is gray instead of the brown a of typical earthworm, undoubtedly a feature evolved to not get found as easily.

As I think about that, I notice that the skill is still on. Doesn't seem like this skill takes much mental processing, or rather, I don't notice it. Just like seeing.

[You have gained the skill Faster Thinking.]

So my unique skill is definitely overpowered. I don't think it's normal to gain skills this fast.

Let's look at the new skill.

  Faster Thinking

  Increases the user's thought speed

I don't notice that tho. Wait! Could it be? Thinking that, I try to activate the skill.

  Now I notice an improvement.

Wow! So I guess, even passive skills can be activated or deactivated as needed.

Anyway, now I guess I'll try the Dig skill and at the same time fill my stomach. I have already noticed before, that I'm lying on stone.

Moving my head down, I open my maw, burrowing my teeth into the stone. I cut through the stone like a hot knife through butter. With a snap, I close my mouth cutting out a piece of the stone and eating it. Looking at my status, the SP remains at 10/10. I decide to repeat. After another two times, I finally notice the SP jump to 9/10.

So after using the skill three times, I consume one point of stamina. Now, let's do a comparison. Not activating the skill, I once again pull out a piece of stone, this time with significantly more effort. I then decide to continue eating. After consuming my tenth piece, I finally feel full.

That reminds me, I still didn't check Foody. Cringing at the name once again, I open the window.

  Foody

  Grants XP for digesting food.

Wow. I guess, that solves the XP crisis. I think, before getting ready to sleep. I had already dug deep enough for my whole body to fit into the hole. Thankfully, I don't need to turn around, as worms can breathe through their skins. Worms also normally do not sleep but can do so after stressful events or during transformations.

Thinking about it I close my metaphorical eyes and shut off my senses as much as possible.
