Zach's heart raced, the adrenaline pumping fiercely through his veins as he found himself surrounded by the ravenous horde.
Each step he took was met with a gnarled hand or snapping jaw, desperate to get a piece of him. His breath came out in ragged huffs, the cold sting of panic setting in.
"Damn it," he spat, brandishing his spear like an extension of himself and using it to knock a biter off bance.
Amid the chaos, he couldn't help but chuckle bitterly, "So much for pying it safe," he murmured, taking a momentary respite to scout his surroundings.
But that moment was snatched away when he felt the cold, decaying breath of a biter inches from his face. Its eyes, devoid of any humanity, locked onto Zach as its hands cwed for him.
The sudden force from the biter threw Zach off bance, sending them both crashing to the ground.
His spear became a lifeline as he jammed it into the creature's mouth, prying it off him with sheer desperation. Using all his might, he crushed its skull beneath his boot.
Heart pounding in his ears, Zach lunged to his feet, his voice rising in a mix of fear and determination.
"STALKER! ANYBODY! HELP!" He hollered into the city, hoping against hope that someone would hear his cry.
His escape route seemed almost divine, a dder stretching upwards to safety, set against the dimly lit backdrop of an old building.
With every ounce of energy he possessed, Zach sprinted towards it, the alleyway echoing with the growls of the pursuing horde.
Reaching the dder, he began his ascent. But just as hope seemed within grasp, a gnarled hand tched onto his foot.
Zach's heart sank as he felt himself being pulled downwards. His beloved spear slipped from his grip, lost amidst the sea of undead.
Panic set in as a second biter joined in, both trying to pull him into their ravenous midst.
But then, in the darkest moment, the day was pierced with the thunderous roar of a gunshot. One biter's grip loosened, its lifeless body tumbling down.
A second shot rang out, and the other biter met the same fate. Blood rained down, creating a grisly spectacle.
From above, a voice boomed with urgency, "STOP GAWKING AND CLIMB, KID!" Startled, Zach looked up to find a man, rifle in hand, accompanied by a woman wielding a simir firearm.
Gritting his teeth, Zach resumed his climb. Reaching the top, the woman's strong grip yanked him up, pulling him to safety.
Panting heavily, Zach managed a weak nod of gratitude. "Too close," he gasped.
The duo introduced themselves - Lih with her soft brown locks and shimmering green eyes, and Carter, with raven-bck hair and penetrating hazel eyes, both appearing to be in their 40s.
They radiated an aura of maturity and experience. Lih's voice broke through his daze as she rummaged in a worn-out pouch, producing a photograph. "Have you seen these kids?" she inquired with a hint of desperation.
Carter added, "Their names are Cody and Aya."
Zach's eyes carefully scanned the photograph, trying to recall if he had encountered the faces staring back at him.
The weight of expectation was evident in the air as Lih and Carter intently observed him.
Finally, he slowly shook his head, regret clouding his eyes. "I haven't come across them," he admitted, feeling a pang of sorrow for the concerned parents before him.
Lih's eyes dimmed with disappointment but held no bme.
"They were on a school field trip," Carter's voice, tinged with a mix of worry and sadness, filled in the bnks.
"The city's chaos caught them off-guard, and we've been searching since. We ck a working vehicle to cover more ground."
Zach's brow furrowed in empathy, "Are they your children?" The synchronized nod from both Lih and Carter added a poignant weight to the atmosphere.
However, before the heavy silence could stretch further, Carter shifted gears, casting a protective gnce over Zach. "You should meet the rest of our group here," he suggested, adopting a more fatherly tone.
Zach hesitated, thinking of the companions he'd left behind. "I need to get back to my group, they might be–"
His protest was swiftly cut off by Lih's firm voice, "That's not an option right now. With that swarm lurking below, we're not going anywhere soon. They'll eventually get sidetracked by something else, but until then, we stay put."
Her eyes darted briefly to the rifle slung over her shoulder, a silent testament to her determination.
With a resigned sigh, Zach nodded, "Someone pyed a trick on us, setting a trap that drew them in. I tried chasing the perpetrator, but they eluded me, using the very blood of those creatures to mask their scent."
Lih exchanged a knowing gnce with Carter, realization dawning on her face.
"So, they're also influenced by scents." Carter, ever the methodical one, quickly retrieved a weathered notepad from his pocket, scribbling down this newfound knowledge.
"In times like these, we need to document every bit of information about these creatures."
Zach's attention was suddenly caught by a particurly ominous note within Carter's notepad.
'They target animals too. Vincent was taken.' He pointed towards the note, a cold shiver running down his spine. "Vincent...?"
Lih's voice turned soft, tinged with pain, "Vincent was our cherished family dog." The heartbreak in her voice was palpable.
Shaking off the mencholy, she motioned towards a rudimentary wooden walkway, connecting their current rooftop to an adjacent one.
"This has been our haven for the past 12 hours. We've managed quite well here, considering. But it's a temporary solution. Eventually, we'll have to venture out and find a safer haven."
Navigating their way down the echoing metal staircase, the cool air seemed to weigh heavily around them.
The journey led them directly into another structure,
evidently a well-maintained office building. Architecturally, it stood in sharp contrast to the worn-out surroundings.
Expansive gss windows allowed a smattering of sunlight to pierce through, illuminating the corridor with an almost ethereal glow.
Lih, with an air of pride, let out a clear, sharp whistle. Moments ter, the sound of footsteps approached, and a group of five individuals emerged from the adjoining rooms, their wary eyes scanning their surroundings, nding on Zach.
What caught Zach's attention first was the striking appearance of a demi-human, sporting majestic antlers that hinted at deer lineage.
"Meet Jug," Lih introduced, her tone fond. The deer demi-human responded with a timid, almost child-like wave, his eyes betraying a hint of curiosity and caution.
Moving on, Lih pointed out the rest of the team in swift succession.
"Over there's Maddy," she motioned to a stern-faced woman with a no-nonsense demeanor.
"Beside her, we have Zane," indicating a tall man with a brooding look. "That's Cob," she added, pointing to a slightly scruffy-looking man, hands buried deep within his pockets, seemingly lost in thought.
"And stly, this is Danny," gesturing toward a younger fellow with an eager, almost restless energy about him.
Cob, his voice slightly muffled by the hands still tucked within his pockets, raised an eyebrow. "Were you the one stirring up all that commotion outside?"
"It wasn't me," Zach responded, regret evident in his voice. "I was chasing someone who did. In hindsight, it was foolish to run after him."
Cob nodded, a smirk pying on his lips. "Well, that's something we can unanimously agree upon." Striding over to one of the expansive windows, he gazed thoughtfully at the chaotic scene below.
Maddy, her gaze sharp and analytical, joined him by the window. Her voice, carrying an undertone of grim resignation, resonated in the quiet room.
"It's bound to get a lot worse before it gets any better." She murmured, watching the restless horde below shuffle aimlessly, their grotesque figures a stark reminder of the world's new reality.
