Chapter 4:- A promise and a battle

The moon hung high in the sky, casting its pale light over the forest. The years of training had transformed Arthur beyond recognition. The once powerless boy, burdened by a curse, was now a powerful mage, having mastered the delicate bance between dark magic and the elemental forces. His heart was heavy, knowing that his time here—under the guidance of Yamikage—was drawing to a close. Though he had spent four long years learning, growing, and facing unimaginable trials, the time had come for him to return home.

Arthur stood alone in the clearing, the night air cool against his skin. The silence of the forest was broken only by the rustling of leaves. His thoughts drifted back to the first time he had stepped into this forest, afraid, lost, and unsure. It felt like a lifetime ago. Now, with dark and elemental magic coursing through his veins, Arthur was prepared to face whatever the world had in store for him. But leaving... leaving Yamikage behind felt like cutting a part of himself loose.

"I’ll tell her tomorrow," he whispered to himself, a soft sigh escaping his lips. "These four years... they were the most precious and happiest of my life."

  The Night Before Departure

The evening had come, and after a simple dinner, Arthur knew it was time to speak the words that would change everything. He had to go back.

"Yamikage-san," he began, his voice steady but his heart racing, "I’m going to leave tomorrow."

The words hung in the air, a weight that neither of them could escape. Yamikage’s expression faltered, her golden eyes widening in shock. The usually confident and imposing dragoness appeared small, vulnerable for a fleeting moment. Her gaze locked onto Arthur as if trying to comprehend his decration.

"So you’re going to leave tomorrow... What?!" she excimed, her voice higher than usual, ced with disbelief.

Arthur nodded, though his own heart felt heavy with regret. "Yes, I’m leaving tomorrow."

Yamikage’s expression shifted, and a flicker of hurt passed through her eyes. She whispered, almost to herself, "What are you saying? Why are you leaving tomorrow? I thought... I thought you were going to live with me."

Arthur stood there, silent, unsure of how to respond. He had never promised such a thing, had he? Yet her pain was undeniable, and it pierced through him.

He opened his mouth to speak, but before he could find the words, Yamikage rushed toward him and threw her arms around him in a desperate embrace. The formidable dragon, so feared and respected by many, was crying in his arms. "Arthur, please... don’t leave me. Stay with me here, please."

Arthur’s heart twisted in his chest. The strong, terrifying creature who had taught him, who had protected him, was now reduced to a vulnerable, broken being, clinging to him for comfort. It was in that moment, as he held her, that he realized how deeply she cared for him.

"Yamikage..." Arthur murmured, gently wrapping his arms around her. "I won’t leave you. I promise, I won’t leave you alone."

He stroked her head, his hand gently moving through her soft hair. She eventually quieted, her sobs turning to slow breaths as she rexed in his arms. Soon, she fell asleep, her head resting in the crook of his arm. Arthur looked down at her, his mind racing. She’s just like a child... so vulnerable.

But as he stared at her sleeping form, his resolve only strengthened. He would return. For her.

  Morning of Departure

The morning sun cast its golden rays through the trees, signaling the beginning of Arthur’s departure. His bags were packed, his heart torn in two. He stood ready to leave, but before he could step away, Yamikage appeared before him.

"Arthur," she said, her voice softer than he had ever heard it. "You will come back, right?"

Arthur turned to her, meeting her gaze. There was a quiet vulnerability in her eyes, something that made his heart ache.

"Yes," he said, giving her a firm nod. "I will come back."

Yamikage stepped closer, her golden eyes searching his face. "Promise?" she whispered.

Arthur smiled, a genuine, reassuring smile. "I promise. I never break my promises."

Yamikage stared at him for a long moment before her lips curled into a small, bittersweet smile. "Then go," she said softly, stepping back to give him space. "But remember... I’ll be waiting for you."

Arthur nodded, the weight of her words settling deep within him. He turned and walked away, his heart heavy, but determined. He would return. There was no turning back now.

  The Battle in the Forest

As Arthur traveled deeper into the forest, his thoughts shifted to what y ahead. He knew that his return to the kingdom would be fraught with challenges, but for now, he relished the quiet of the woods. That is, until he stumbled upon a scene that would change everything.

Two Fenrir stood in the clearing, their fur matted and torn. One was weak, its body trembling from exhaustion. Arthur’s sharp instincts kicked in. These fenrir were not the usual predators of the forest. Something rger had driven them to this state.

Big monster... Big magic stone... The thought crossed his mind, and his lips curled into a sinister grin. That means a lot of money.

With a quick flick of his wrist, Arthur summoned his magic. Wind magic swirled around him as he drew upon the dark energy that had become an extension of himself. He combined the two, creating a whirlwind of dark winds that cut through the air, slicing through the first Fenrir with ease. The creature howled in pain before colpsing in a heap of blood and fur.

The second Fenrir lunged at him, but Arthur was prepared. His hand fred with dark fire, the bck fmes crackling as they consumed the wolf in an instant. The creature’s cries were quickly silenced as it was reduced to nothing but ash.

Arthur stood in the center of the clearing, breathing heavily. He scanned the area for the big monster he had expected, but found nothing. Disappointed, he looked around and spotted a hidden cave, concealed behind two rge trees. His curiosity piqued, he approached cautiously, the promise of more riches in his mind.

However, what he found inside was not a monster, but a tiny Fenrir cub. It y on the ground, its small body absorbing mana from the surrounding forest, its eyes barely open.

Arthur froze, a wave of guilt washing over him. He had just killed the cub’s parents. This was my fault, he thought, his chest tightening with remorse.

The cub yawned, its tiny body trembling as it continued to feed on the mana around it. Arthur knelt down and gently picked it up, cradling the cub in his arms. "I’m sorry," he whispered. "But I won’t let you be alone. I’ll raise you, help you grow strong."

The cub nuzzled against his chest, and Arthur felt a warmth spread through him. Maybe... maybe this won’t be so bad after all.

As he stood there, the forest around him still, he made a vow to the tiny creature. I will take care of you. And one day, you’ll be as strong as your parents were.

With that promise in his heart, Arthur turned and walked back into the forest, the journey ahead of him still uncertain, but no longer so lonely.
