Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass was published in 1845. It is easily found at bookstores, usually in the African-American Studies section. There are several paperback editions. One of good quality is published by the Belknap Press (Harvard), edited by Benjamin Quarles.

Narrative was the first of several autobiographies written by Frederick Douglass. Douglass's life is well documented in Frederick Douglass, an authoritative biography by the acclaimed historian William S. McFeely.

Museums and monuments
Douglass's house in Washington, D.C. is the present-day location of the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site.
   Rochester, N.Y. provided a new start for Douglass in 1847. He is honored there with the Frederick Douglass Museum & Cultural Center.
   In October, 1996, the town of New Bedford, Massachusetts -- Douglass's home immediately following his escape from slavery -- dedicated a Frederick Douglass Memorial.
