Natchitoches, Louisiana Pulling into Natchitoches late one night, Jan and I confidently strode into a motel to grab a room, only to discover the town was basically full up. We raced a gaggle of other hapless travelers to the last place in town that purportedly still had rooms, and after a 45-minute wait while the overburdened motel checked to see if there really were any rooms left, we finally got the key to our night's lodgings. We were rewarded for our anxiety the next day as we awoke to a glorious spring morning and drove down to the center of town, which lies along a placid river. It was spring break, and a number of colleges had been working at crew racing workshops all week. Today was their day to show off what they had learned. We were also treated to a get-together of Porsche enthusiasts. They noisily rolled into the park that fronts the river, proudly sporting their brightly painted, immaculately maintained, new and vintage treasures. A Natchitoches specialty is meat pies, objects that resemble fruit turnovers but which are filled with a special and spicy ground meat concoction. Try one at Lasyone's (Lassie-own') Meat Pie Kitchen and Restaurant. You won't be disappointed. By the way, the town's name is pronounced "Nack'-i-tush" (go figure). |
