Laura plantation
About an hour west of New Orleans lies an old French plantation, purportedly the site where the Br'er Rabbit stories originated. Jan and I made our way there on a warm spring afternoon. A heavy haze hung in the sky as we coursed our way along the flat back roads, past the signs advertizing swamp tours, and then alongside a towering levee that protects the land below from the potentially destructive power of the awesome Mississippi. Cajun guides met us on the front walkway; a tour had just begun. For $5 each we could run and join it. The thick accent of our guide transported us to a different time and place. The restored portions of the old mansion told a story of many lives, slave and free, lived so many years ago. A British expatriate -- working for a U.S. oil company -- was on the tour with us. His children delighted in running up and down the numerous stairs and romping in the expansive fields of spring wildflowers. Lazy day. |
