The Alsace
Headed south on the German autobahn on our way to Strasbourg, France, Jan and I somehow missed our turnoff, not noticing our mistake until confronted with signs for Switzerland. We pulled over at the next rest area and checked the map. No problem. Instead of starting at Strasbourg and taking a week to course our way down through the Alsace, we would go from south to north instead. So we crossed into France at Colmar to do exactly that. Except that we were so entranced by the small towns of southern Alsace that we decided not to set foot in any of the large cities. So we never did get to Strasbourg after all. Being late fall, it was overcast most days. But rain was rare, and the muted light merely served to enhance the beauty of the flowers and the countryside. Since it was the off season in this normally tourist infested area, there was plenty of parking everywhere we went. And the roads were easy to travel, as there was less than the usual amount of traffic on them. |
